If I want to replace the manual transmission shift knob on the 2016 taco is it

The 2016 shift boot connects to the shift knob differently than 2nd gen. It has a twist lock connection. I doubt a 2nd gen knob will work, although you can screw it into the shaft.

Is anyone producing this style yet, that includes the twist and lock attachment? Does this secure the boot only or the shift knob as well?

So am I right to assume that an earlier shift knob will fit by threading on the column, but will not allow the shift knob to secure to the boot?

What are the options here?

Another option is to take off the boot, put some rubber bands around the shaft at the desired height, and put the boot back on. That should hold it up.

 

Ok so that would at least hold up the boot - and then is the knob itself threaded in the same way as the old one? Or does it only attach via that plastic piece?

 

Now that I am unsure of. I would assume it's threaded on, but I can't say for sure.

It threads on. The snap ring only holds the boot up.

Not sure about the threads. I am planning on making my own out of an deer Antler so I am curious as well.

 

The shift knob was pretty easy the upper part of the console comes right off just gently pull up on it. You are removing the whole area of the shift boot cup holders and the front face of the console storage bin. As far as the knob and the boot separating you just twist the chrome ring a 1/4 turn and pull down and it comes loose. Then unscrew the knob. The boot for the park brake lever is attached pretty good to the lever and the upper console so rather than risking messing it up I just lifted and twisted the console so I could modify the shifter boot without messing with it. The chrome ring is held on by one zip tie and a small dab of adhesive. Just snip and pull. I slid the boot wrong side out down the shifter and put a heavy zip tie on it then wrapped it in gorilla tape about 3 wraps to prevent the cut end of the zip tie from eating into the boot in the future. Put the console back down and snapped in place. Got the boot tucked and fitted the way I wanted it. Then I put the jam nut on the shifter applied some blue locktite to the threads screwed the knob down where I wanted it. The jamb nut is a 19mm just ran it up aginst it and tightened down while holding the knob.

 

Is your shifter grey or green? With the knob and the boot being lowered it looks amazing, and makes me want to hop on the manual tacoma wagon!

 

Grey... Parked close to the edge of my drive way in that photo I'm guessing the grass reflection is making it look green... Come to think of it I may have been wearing a work shirt ( high visibility yellow).
