I didn't know what would happen, so I just tried it and then edited it.
Dude's the size of an overweight fat cat... and he's barely got any coordination right now.

He did go out for a short walk up and down the street, and every now and then would stop and sit down. Didn't seem to want to budge until I said "Duncan, come" which is a good sign to me :)

Also, thankfully, both times I took him outside (at 2am and this morning before work) he took care of both sides of business, which is great. This did come after an initial potty incident, and when I took him out for the walk, he stopped to pee but didn't poop until we got back inside... oh well... he's off to a good start :)

Puppy breath, yeah... breeders also kept them in a sawdust chip bedding area, he still smells like that too.

    Done

He found a spot on the edge of the couch under all the cushions

Do I have to get up yet?

Ophthalmologist visit today... Let the spending spree begin...

Thankfully they were able to set me up with a drop off, since the doctor is going to be out of town for the next couple weeks... at least I can get an idea of what to expect from the eye injury.

Good news: Left eye is fine (perfect beautiful healthy eye is what the Dr. said), Right eye is not injured.

Bad news: Right eye suffers from a genetic disease called Microphthalmia, condition where the eye doesn't develop properly, and in his case, he's never seen out of that eye, so to him its perfectly normal.

The "upside" to the diagnosis is that he still has to have the eye removed, else continuous treatments and infections, but the cost of the surgery is about $800 (I was expecting 2-3x as much) and can be done when I have him neutered to lessen the costs some (due to shared anesthesia, which apparently is about half the cost). Will have to have the eye shut, and until then, I've got to pull the eyelids apart and give him some medication (which I'm not looking forward to... I'm already feeling a bit queasy about lol).

I would do whatever I can to combine to two procedures. Dogs and anesthesia don't mix well.
If removing the non-working eye eliminates any future issues like infections and stuff, it's a no brainer to me. Do it.
It is quite a bit of money up front, but you are setting him up for a healthy life. Plus, how much would he have been without a genetic issue, probably $2000 or so??? Still saving money and saving Duncan the Pirate Dog from soemthing worse.
When he gets a healed up let me know, I got two dogs he can rumble with in the backyard.
Good luck out East in a few weeks. MMMMMM, bear sausages

Yup... the little guy isn't going anywhere.... well he's going everywhere, just with me ;)

Well the Dr said best to do the neutering somewhere between one and two years of age, so it's gonna be a while. I know it's never fun to put a dog under for surgery, but I'm toying with the idea of attempting to do it sooner rather than later, cuz I'm gonna ask my Vet why I would need to neuter him in the first place - I have no intention of mating him, so... why else bother with that surgery? Yeah, $1,850 is what they were asking for him originally, so the $800 is still saving money while giving him the healthy life his breeders wanted him to have.

Bear sausages?? all we did with last year's meat was make bear pepperoni, which was waaay too good and a 2lb package didn't last more than a day or two. We've got 12 people going (and possibly Duncan too) and 5 tags to fill... there will be much packing out of the canyons to do LOL

With my bulldog we neutered him within the last 5 years because it was making him more aggressive and he started to pee on things while we were gone. But since then he hasn't been as "bad" so you could just leave it a lone till things get worse if they even do. :notsure:

Beautiful puppy. If he's not going to be roving the neighborhood in search of treasure and booty, I mean bounty, I'm sure I wouldn't neuter him. Little fella needs his manly parts so he can have a rich and full pirate life. Arrr!!

That's kinda what I was thinking... Wait and see, but I think as far as the eye goes, the sooner I can get it removed and the eye lids sewn shut, the better... Plus I recall my old vet saying, when KC was young, that younger dogs do better with surgery and recovery. Will have to see what the vey thinks, and what my paychecks think as well lol

do they ever get too old to get neutered? Daughter's bully is getting quite an attitude and I am sure he is suffering from blue balls but she is afraid to get him done because he is about 4 years old now

Can be done but is preferable to get them young. May cost a little more for different process now that he is older.

For females is much better to get it done before the first heat though.

Not necessarily true... My rottie KC got spayed at 16 weeks (this was 11 yrs ago) and a few years later she developed incontinence issues. The Eye Doc told me last Thursday that Vets had at one point started saying that getting it done earlier was better in the long run for the dog, but they've since found out otherwise. She also said that Duncan getting neutered between 1 to 2 yrs old would be pretty reasonable.

True. It can pretty much be done whenever as long as the dog is healthy going in. The ASPCA website says it better than I did:

"While the traditional age for neutering is six to nine months, puppies as young as eight weeks old can be neutered as long as they’re healthy. Dogs can be neutered as adults as well, although there’s a slightly higher risk of post-operative complications in older dogs, dogs that are overweight or dogs that have health problems."

The specification for females I made was just from doing some reading on the subject for my 19 week old lab. Seems to be a slightly higher risk of some types of cancer and other issues if several heats occur before spaying. Take that as you will as it was Internet research lol. I plan on having mine girl scheduled to go in in a couple of months.
