Sport = higher profit margins for toyota = less value for the customer

Completely agree, although I believe their profit margin is high on all the Tacomas. My wife has a 15 Lexus IS250 that stickered for about the same as my truck. The Lexus is built like a tank and has incredible build quality compared to my truck.

Do you think the reason is that the IS250 is built in Kyushu, Japan?

More than likely. I've had a few Acuras over the years and the ones built in Japan had better build quality than the most expensive one I had that was built in Ohio.

I bought the Sport because half of the OR features you lose if you get a Manual transmission. Also, I've never really been offroading. I did get the 4x4 for the just-in-case of it but I haven't had to use it yet. 2016 TRD Sport DCSB v6 4x4 Manual transmission. Barcelona Red.

Can you tell us what Off Road features you lose with a manual?

You lose crawl control and MTS. But you gain A-TRAC instead. See page 19 and the pages below that in http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/ebrochure/.
On a TRD Sport you lose Hill Start Assist Control and Pushbutton start. You gain Clutch start-cancel switch.

The 16 Tacoma has poorer build quality than an IS?

    That is quite disappointing

Well, you have A-TRAC (as do I on an automatic) and because the truck will stall without clutching, I understand that reason. MTS is just adjustable A-TRAC. I will agree that an automatic is a far better tranny to off road in... just far less chance of tire spin and trail damage... and burning a clutch is no fun.

Yep that's why I went with automatic this time around. Better for wheeling

    I am poor
everything is so much simpler south of the border.

For me, I had to get a Sport because Toyota Canada doesn't offer any other trim (besides limited) in a double cab.

I am very happy with my purchase though, got a Silver TRD Sport 4x4 with the upgrade and tow package.

Biggest reason I got the sport is the trim. I'll get aftermarket lockers eventually plus who needs crawl control? I'll just do it myself. ;)
