North Georgia Wheeling Trip

@GoLongJoe my 1st gen tacoma was 2wd, I had a stock elocker. I drove all over trey. Had another friend 2wd no locker hit trey. It's fun for what it is. If anyone wants to meet at my house or near by I live in Sugar Hill just PM me.

 

Nice, unfortunately mine does not have the locker at all. I've been looking into how to get that on because I want to avoid 4x4 (don't want the extra weight). I know it'd be costly to put on but I'm not getting rid of this truck (it was my dad's). Any suggestions? It'll be on down the road when I attack this but for now I'm dealing with everything stock.
We actually might take you up on that. We plan on going out May 6th weekend if you're up for it.

 

Definitely up for May 6! So you have a couple options that I know of. You could find an axle with an elocker, swap axles and have a elocker. Maybe just the third member depending on what axle size? Not sure on that. For me I am 4wd but no elocker, I just bought an ARB rear locker and twin air compressor from a member on here who is doing an ARB group buy. I paid $1220 shipped for both parts! Nimble Will Gap is 2wd friendly, super easy. Again Hawk Mountain is a great place to camp. There's places all over that area. Not to mention they are right next to each other. I'd look in that area. I've heard Amicolola Falls has some nice stuff

 

@Mad T we need to do something the May 6th weekend and the next weekend (14-15) after that. Class ends before the 6th then my summer class starts 17th

We could do Gulches one of those weekends. Or hit AOP again or go to Alabama and hit choccolocco mountain orv park in Alabama. Or the main trails in Ga plus a few others

 

That't what I figured. I'm going to do some searching for a new axle then. I think that's my best bet. And then, I'll get to figure out how to wire everything up. Is an elocker pretty much my only option for the 05 taco? And what is this third member you ask of? Again, I have no idea what I'm dealing with and am running on research online (which makes me a professional moron on this matter still). This is all future project stuff for now, I'm buying parts (shocks, bushings, control arms, etc) in waves and plan on doing all install at the same time. I just don't want to waste my time on these parts for a truck that spins one tire every time it hits a puddle.

Right on for the trail ride! I'll let you know when we plan on heading out, I believe we'll do Sat morning (7th) but we'll have to allow for getting off work at 5 and wanting to have time to set up and stuff. I've only done this twice around Jones Creek and I took my girl, so I'm ready for some real dirt this time.

 

Do you plan on off-roading a lot? i.e. adding armor and a lift and what not?

 

In the long run, I'd like to make it out to trails at least twice a month. So yes, but nothing like rockcrawling. I do plan on lifting at least 1-2" when I replace the shocks (because why not?). front guard will be needed and I'll want a winch with it (but that'll be another $500) at least. Not sure what I'll want to do first, rear axle, or front guard. Those I forsee being the most expensive purchase. What do you think? on the right trac?

 

Well in you're earlier post you said you didn't want 4x4 because of the added weight. But if you add all that stuff the weight and ability of a 4x4 is a lot less than all of that. Not to mention I've never needed a winch down here. My buddy has used his twice, once to re-spool it and another to get a stock jeep out of trouble. So I'd look into converting it if you plan on wheeling a lot more. But that's just my 2 cents.

But if you plan on getting bigger tires I'd go a full 3" lift, front bumper is nice because it looks cool and it's a piece of mind. It's up to you what you go first. If you don't convert it I'd look into a locker for sure, it'll help a ton while a bumper may or may not depending on what you're doing. (oh and if you add a bumper you'll need to upgrade to a stiffer coil anyways )

That is a well invested 2 cents. So for weight reasons, winch is most likely off the table. I'll look into the 3" lift. It's still my daily driver for now so that may be a point in the future when I say "what else can I do to this truck?" I also want to avoid having to get bigger wheels for now, My wallet is limited until I can sell a butt load of insurance. Just starting out. I'll most likely stick with a 1.5" but again, we'll see. I guess I'm going to have to go with a new axle before the bumper. If y'all run into one for less than $500 for an 05 taco (6lugs) anywhere, I'll get you a case of beer. I'll start looking in used parts most likely.

 

You gotta pay to play haha. 1st gen 4x4 swap is a lot easier than 2nd gen so I understand that. People have wheeled 2wd and done fine just gotta pick your lines. You'll want good tires since you won't have any front axles pulling you up so I'd add full 3" lift and tires to the long list of mods haha. I'd look at junk yards and stuff like that. Keep an eye out for totaled rigs on this forum that are close.

But in the mean time just take it out on some trails, just have a buddy with you incase you do get stuck. Stack rocks, try different angles, add some speed. But I'd stick to the easy ones. Once you get some confidence then you can try hitting the fun side of Trey and Charlies Creek
