How did you mount your CB Antenna?

I just purchased a Cobra 75WXST CB and I'm trying to decide what to do with the antenna. What have you used for an antenna setup? Mount to bedrail, hood, tailgate, hitch? Are you using springs, quick disconnects? I'm looking for good ideas. I'm running a softtopper so attaching to the tailgate is probably my best option. Does anyone have tips on getting the best reception? What is the best antenna length? 4' Firestik II? I promise I'll post pics after I install this thing but I'd like to see what others have done.

I mounted mine to the end of the bed rail nearest the tailgate. Don't have a better picture at the moment, I can post more helpful shots tomorrow if you want. I used this

Don't know how well it'll hold long term, but I've had no issues. The only downside is you have to watch the antenna (I have a 3 foot firestik) when you on the trail going under trees. I preferred near the back as it gave me the least amount of interference from the cabin. I didn't intend on mounting it this way, but it required the least amount of modification to the vehicle. I ran the coax inside the frame up through the drain plug underneath the right front passenger seat. It's gotten snagged a few times, but no issues. I have a radio quite similar to yours and sits comfortably in the center console.

I have the same radio and opted for a stealth no drilling install. I also have a Tonneau cover so my options on bed mount antenna were limited.



Power box is under seat pinned by the seat base spring.

Wiring runs inside door panels to fuse box.

Antenna receiver mounts to glass and cable runs inside door panels to power box under seat

Outside antenna mount to rear glass

hows he signal with that glass mounted antenna?

 

Reception on a glass mount is as good as any, and I've had all types over the years, as long as you install it properly.
Mainly, the area where it makes contact with glass needs to be free of any metallic based tint, and the antenna need to have locktight on the treads to stay and not fall off.
Where you loose over a conventional 4ft antenna is that you're limited to a 50 watt output, which is illegal if that makes a difference. The max peak output on my CB is 8-10 watts so I'm ok with it.

relentless fab ditch light bracket, right side of hood. 4' firestick II on heavy spring and quick disconnect. excellent SWR. Check CB radio websites for good info on proper locations, not TW. There a lot on here who obviously are more worried about how it looks, not proper function.

 

I have a mount I built for my 15' that slides into the bed track.the mount does have to be grounded but that is no big deal. I don't think I'm going to hard wire one in my truck. I just don't use it enough. I may have another one at work. If I do I would let you have it just for the shipping cost. I will look Tuesday.

 

This seems to be the most recent CB talk thread? (Not trying to bring back ones from the dead). Anyways, have been getting super crappy range with my CB, like I can only talk/listen if the truck I'm talking to is right next to me. About 20 feet from the antenna! Any ideas?

I have a 3ft firestik and mount behind my cab. I know it's a crappy spot but just about a mile range or so would be fine.

Could this all be because my mount is rusty or not grounded?!

I had to put a collapsible elbow on this so that I don't destroy the ceiling lights (again) in the garages I frequent

 

Hoping you're still here since this is a pretty old post. I haven't been able to find out if the stock tinting is metallic or not. Did you have to trim some off or were you able to just mount over the stock stuff? I'm contemplating doing this exact build.

Drilled and installed a PL-259 in the side and use a small length of pipe with an end cap and NMO connector. I have cable and power routed in each vehicle and just swap between. Also works as a great beach umbrella holder.

 

I'd be interested in knowing how you mounted it too.
