For sure. Zombies are a convenient contemporary means of getting people to see why you'd want to prep. I use it all the time with people to try and get them in the prepping mindset. Start them out with a fun conversation about what you'd need for the zombie apocalypse, and then swing it over to a natural disaster and point out all of the similarities.

Got my Maxpedition "fatty" pocket organizer today for my FAK.

I took a few items out, and I need to add a few basic meds.

    _20160412_191254_zpshfxjrorc_c23bf7055979267ebf38a5369db1fb7925e48c38.jpg

Here it is loaded. Priority will be to control bleeding and keep/restore airway and breathing, also have items for suturing and other minor cuts and scrapes.

Next to a couple 5.56 Pmags for size comparison.

In the center console next to the mini EDC organizer.

I just bought one of those Maxpedition organizers as well on Amazon. Really like it for cleaning up my used to be cluttered console.

Great list. One suggestion though if I may, it looks like you are planning for bugging out with four people, I'd make sure there was a good fixed blade knife for all adults involved. They are just so handy to have around. Even my wife, who doesn't carry a pocket knife regularly can't do without a knife while we are camping. Only one kabar is about the only weak point I see in that list. Other than that, that is a solid list.

Just a heads up for those of you that aren't active or ex military...

Check with your closest military base about auctions they hold for "expired" military equipment. I just bought a Bantam Trailer and a 20x12 canvas tent for less than $400.

I'm looking for a backpack to wear when I'm riding on my Dual sport. I want something in the 20 to 30L range. I'm looking to keep it under $50 because i dont want to trash a nice backpack (this is why I'm not just using my current daypack).

Im going to carry water and misc stuff in it when I'm out in the desert. Right now I'm looking at the LA Policegear 3 day pack. Its a little big but its one of the only packs similar to what I'm looking for with half way decentreviews.

    Does anybody have any suggestions?

I'm not trying to be an ass as I have no idea what your background is and I'm not trying to single you out, just posting as a general service announcement, but I've seen way too many people carry suture material (and other wound closure materials) without knowing how or when to use it. Not all wounds require suturing (or even closure- some should not be closed) and there are often alternative means of wound closure that will work as well or better, particularly for the lay person (the Steri-strips pictured are an example although I'd also add an ampule of tincture of benzoin which are available on Amazon for under $5/pack). Additionally, if you are going to suture you need proper tools and that includes a needle holder (hemostats, particularly curved will typically not hold a needle securely enough), skin forceps and scissors as well as the ability to create and maintain a sterile field so as to not introduce pathogens into what is going to become a closed environment. More important than actual closure is proper wound prep- a clean and properly cared for but unclosed wound will usually granulate in over time but an improperly closed wound may well become a much larger problem very quickly. You need a means to thoroughly flush (irrigate) the wound; potable water under mild pressure (~12-15psi) will work but you need a means to deliver that water and enough of it. A syringe (bulb or piston) works well but a water bottle with a hole poked in the lid will work in a pinch. You also need to remove hair in the area, especially when using Steri-strips as you will not get good adhesion. That said, wound closure beyond maybe a pack of steri-strips would not be in my immediate access kit, it's not something that you are going to be doing in a rush and it's generally not going to kill you short of tying off a bleeder and most folks aren't going to know anything about that. Instead it's something that will be done after you've had a chance to prep. As such I'd put the suture material (and honestly the steri-strips) into a larger kit that maybe rides in the back or wherever and stick to things that are an immediate threat and most commonly needed out of convenience i.e. Band-aids.

For those interested in learning about suturing, a good place to start is Ethicon's Wound Closure Manual (which should be in any preppers home library anyways). It will not substitute for actual training but it will give you an idea what is involved. Proper wound closure of anything needing more than a Band-Aid is not rocket science but it's generally not basic first aid either. It also requires practice in order to have any hope of proficiency. The use of tapes such as Steri-strips, staplers and glues such as Dermabond are also covered.
    http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/surgery/Education/facilities/measey/Wound_Closure_Manual.pdf

Not even going to touch on chest decompression (I'm assuming that's what the needle is for) other than to say get proper training before poking a hole in a chest.

For a quick grab and go or throwable type kit, which is what that appears to be, I would add some more dressings such as some 4x4s or one of those tightly packaged ABD pads (I realize you have the Israeli dressing and a combat dressing) and at least a roll of 2” Kling for keeping things in place. If you are going to carry a tourniquet, add a Sharpie marker to your kit; they’re handy for lots of things.

Here's a link to some good courses for those interested in First Aid outside of the normal scratches and bruises. http://www.remotemedical.com/RMI-Training/Public-Courses

<---- Disclaimer- not a doctor and don’t play one on TV and nothing I say should be taken as medical advice; one should always seek proper medical attention and training, etc., etc., etc.

Agreed. I'm an Army medic/paramedic, the trauma supplies are basically a copy of the standard Army IFAK. Not sure if the pic doesn't show it, but everything you two mentioned to add are in the 2 kits I carry.
