It's super quiet and smooth, which is good. It's a royal pain to figure out how to carry a spare, which is bad. There ain't no repairing it with an extra link if it breaks. So I guess I'm still undecided but I'll probably not keep it long term.

If it is mostly a commuter then totally go with a rigid fork and 1x...I just wouldn't recommend spending that much for the GX11 on a commuter. You can get a 10 speed XT rear derailleur, cassette and front ring/ possibly crankset for fairly cheap. Put some smaller tires like some of the newer "adventure" tires and you would have a fun ass commuter! I used a single speed rigid as my commuter (2ish miles) for a while and it was so fun!
I say Yeti or Slash! My next bike will be either the Yeti SB4.5c or Ibis Ripley and my current bike is a remedy so I am probably a little biased haha

I took some time to really look at my bike and the bottom bracket and current crank are fine, so I'm just going to try and find a 5-bolt single chainring that's roughly the same size as the middle ring currently on it and see what cassettes will fit the back, it has a 7 speed there now. Worst case I have a 1x7, which should be fine for the hills around here.

Although knowing me I'm going to be "that guy" who starts out just replacing two or three worn out things and ends up spending more than the cost of a nice new bike on this old one. I've already caught myself thinking about the bike frames the local powder-coating shop have on display...

haha I know what you mean! there's nothing wrong with putting a little money in an older bike and saving for a newer one dedicated to mountain biking! 1x7 would be fine for most things, it might be tough for long steep offroad climbs but for the most part will be fine.

what part of VA are you in? I am moving back there in a few weeks!

Being an enduro 29 owner, that bike with an offset bushing is beast. But if I was buying again I'd go yt Capra or Jeffsy. Best bang for buck imo

My park bike, which I haven't used in over a year. :( Damn kids getting in the way. Might have to sell ...the bike, not my kids.

That too! All these youngens with their groomed trails and fancy jumping tricks. I'm an old school DHer who enjoys barreling down the gnarliest shit I can find.

Now I'm just fighting for a parking spot at Gymboree. :annoyed:

Old school when you didn't need motocross suspension on mtn bikes. Back then I could
when duals slalom races with just putting down my seat post on my GT Xizang. Kids today
are soft with 29" tires and mushy suspension. :bikewhoops:

I had a Xizang back in the day. I used to work in a shop and the GT warehouse would periodically offer shop monkeys deals. I got a 1993 model that was missing a shifter and the back wheel for something ridiculous like $1,000. Ended up building that sucker super light, drilled the crank arms, Mag 21 Ti, the whole deal. Got it down to sub 20 lbs and it was quick. Broke the Hyperlite bar I had it and after that I kind of finally realized the stupidity of being a weight weenie. I wish I still had that bike, one of the few that I wish I hadn't sold.

That Jeffsy looks extremely promising. I'm planning on demo'ing one this summer and perhaps adding it to the fleet. But you're absolutely right, YT hands down offers the best bang for the buck. And having experience on the Capra, it definitely lives up to all the hype. Really can't say enough great things about these bikes. A few of my buddies also have the carbon Tues and they all love them as well and plan on picking up some capras in the near furutre.
