Im trying to wrap my head around what I could realistically expect for trade in on my truck. Its an 05 dcsb TRD or, great truck no problems and its about to get the frame replaced. Clean Carfax, it has 135k on it. I would probably be trading it in too a used car dealer, not a Toyota dealer either. Pics can be seen in my build thread, link below.

Also I still owe money on it, would this pose a problem when trying to trade it in? If were to trade it in on something else I would likely be financing whatever isint covers by my trade in.

You will get more for it selling it yourself, it would be more hassle but the work will be worth the reward. If you still want to trade in use KBB trade in value as a guide- it is not gospel- but it will ball park you on trade in value. Hopefully your truck has more value than what you owe. If you dont mind a recommendation- avoid rolling unpaid balance into your new car loan- do the math you will not like the final price of what you are actually paying.

Try carmax, but you can check the kbb dealer trade in. Carmax has been pretty close to that for my truck.

2015 TRD Sport with 25,000 miles on it. Leather seats, 3 inch lift and tons of goodies. They offered me $25,000 and yet had a 2011 TRD Sport on the lot stock with about 90,000 miles on it for $31,000. I spit my coffee up on his desk when they said what they would give me.

    Me too.

I use em for kindling in the wood stove. Along with service reminders and tire "deals".

Everything is negotiable. The other day when I was at a dealer they had a sign up that Tacoma trade ins were in high demand and they were paying top price for them. Not sure what they meant as I didn't check on it, but would go after the KBB bluebook value if they don't take it, walk out, they may come after you.

I save them up for a bit, then rip them up and mail them back. It has tapered off a bit.

I worked on a lot for a short time- KBB never bought a car- it is just a guide. Make no mistake cars sale is a business and you make your money on the buy- the lower they can buy your car the more they can make. Just go in eyes wide open and if the numbers dont work for you then walk away but also be realistic your are not going to get full retail as a trade in.

Yeah I worked in sales for a few years and know how it works. It's pretty shitty offering someone 3-6k less than trade and selling it for full boat retail. it seems decent deals and honesty would sell more cars than a full bent over boning would, but that's why I wire stuff now, not sell it.

What's the sales tax rate in PA 3%? Does your state offer a rebate on sales tax if you purchase another vehicle through a dealer? I only ask because when I was looking to buy my truck and trade in my 2013 WRX it made more sense to trade in vs private sale once I factored in the sales tax I would save by trading in.

So if you truck is worth say 10k in trade in and the new vehicle is 25k, if you trade in you would only pay sales tax on the difference which is 15k. That would 1312.50 in tax on that if its 8.75% (NY is high). Now if you don't trade in you have to pay the full sales tax on 25k which is 2187.50. So essentially you need to sell your truck for 875.00 more just to break even, any more is profit. Now factor in the hassle of a private sale and you may just want to trade it in and be done with it. Obviously insert your own numbers as this was just an estimate. Good luck either way.

You can do an online trade in quote at carvana. If they aren't in your area, you may have to lie about zip code. It asks you a few questions and if you sell to them, they'll come pick it up.

I also did a quote at carmax. With these numbers in hand, I had leverage to trade my vehicle in. The dealer gave me $500 over the carvana number.

    My last trade in experience:
I took my one owner 1996 V6 LE X-CAB 4X4 in to the dealership when I bought my 2006. It had 51K miles and looked like new in and out. The salesman offered me $3K and after I choked and turned red gave me a final offer of $4500. I sold it the next week for $6500 cash to some guy who showed up while I was at home for lunch. I had to turn away so many buyers responding to the ad after that. I wished I had asked $7500.
    Don't sell your truck short!
