So I just finished my first semester at USC (that's South Carolina, not So Cal) and I've got a small predicament. Currently my major is Civil Engineering, but I no longer want to do that. Instead I want to do Architecture, so I applied for a transfer to Clemson and Auburn for next semester and got into both. Clemson has one of the best Architecture programs in the nation and not to mention the in state tuition is nice. I've got a bunch of friends there and it's just a nice school all around. Auburn is also really nice and puts me closer to some friends because I have some at UGA, Tulane, Bama, and obviously Clemson. But it's expensive out of state. I'm not a big fan of USC at all. It's just not for me. But, I have a sweet job for next semester if I stay. I would be a House Page in the State Capitol working for the House of Representatives and this would look really good on any resume down the road. If I stay at USC too, I would get behind in the curriculum for Architecture, although I could still take Calculus, Physics, and Spanish but thats all I can take that would coincide with the curriculum. I really want to leave USC, but I just cant turn down that job. Most of you guys seem to have your head on straight so I'm just interested to hear what you think.

I would get ahead in your studies for your architecture degree. It would save money and you said you have several friends there.

With this economy and everything, you will need to think towards the future. Everything happens for a reason. For example I was taking a project management course a year ago and i sat next to this lady, who tend to do the project last min, and i ended up doing a majority of the work in that class. But she turned out to be a supervisor for the EMR department at GHS, and offered me a job working for her. So like I said, everything happens for a reason. Do what you think is right and what you want to do. But also think about what looks good on your resume. I have yet to hear someone say they love their job.. They love the money but the job is usually quesitonable.

That's another thing I was thinking. If I stay at USC I would have to do summer school to catch up a little bit. Summer School= meh
Its cold. but the van is always warm.
Yeah this job would pretty much give me an edge for any other job I apply for later and that's why it's so tough to turn down. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and I don't think I can walk away from it.

I'd say Clemson because it will help you in building for your future. Even though you have some friends at Auburn, is it really worth the double tuition costs (that's the way it is here)? Go ahead and get your degree in Arch. at Clemson and you'll be set. As for USC: I wouldn't do that option because you need a strong support for your future, and Arch. seems to be what you want to do. Good luck!

A couple of questions come to mind -

Why don't you like USC? Do they have an Architecture program there?

As a former Architecture student, I just have one piece of advice..... make sure you love it because you're gonna HATE it when you go to school for it.

I can't really decide what it is about USC that I don't like, but ever since I took my visit there it just gave off a weird vibe to me and I didn't like it. One thing I know I don't like is Columbia. It's not a good college town, but I do have high standards. USC doesn't have Architecture otherwise I could suck it up for another semester and then transfer. That's one reason why I want to get out now so I don't get too far behind. And yes, I've heard that the studio practically becomes you're home. I'm actually visiting with some local architects, who happen to be family friends too, today to make sure this is something I really want to do. I'm pretty sure this is what I want to do, but I just gotta get some hands on experience to check.

I'm an academic advisor. Take the page job and stay next semester. Defer your enrollment at Clemson for a semester. Done and done.

Never listen to academic advisors, the only thing they want you to do is stay in school and pay the school money for as long as possible. By deferring your time at Clemson that will just be one more year you will have to pay tuition in your life. Although college is a blast, the debt is not worth it. I say this not ever even having school debt. (thanks parents).

Since you stated that you want to do architecture working in a political office seems like a waste. Yes it is good experience but not for an arch. major. You could argue that it would look good on a resume but on the flip side employers also look for determination so dicking around doing some of these things might be a hinderence for you down the road.

I say this assuming that in fact architecture is going to be your final major and that you will not want to switch again after another year. I switched 4 times and graduated in 4.5 years. I did this WITHOUT the help of my advisor who instructed me to take classes I did not need. I made sure that every class I took was going to work for any major. If it was up to my advisor I'd probably still be in school!

As for the friends and family issue. I think this is a mute point. One of the purposes of college is to meet new people. Thanks to the world wide intra webs as I like to call them, keeping in touch is easier than ever with the social websites we have. Plus coming home or going on trips to see old friends/family are always more fun.

I know I've typed a lot but and for that I am sorry but I hope you read this and every other opinion, take them all into heart and make up your own mind. Heck opinions are like butt holes, everyone has them and they all stink.

    So in short, Clemson.

I've never been a big fan of USC though so it's not like the move will kill me. But NCSU does indeed have an awesome engineering program, but I want to get our of engineering now.

Good to hear from somebody like this. I'm really leaning towards this option right now.

I don't expect the political part of the job to help me out. The job itself is a very prestigious position. In fact, several interviews are required before you can even apply, and I didn't interview once. I was asked to do this by a politician. And one of my main goals is to graduate with as little debt as possible, if any at all, so going to Clemson next semester is looking really attractive for that so I wont have to spend extra time in school for nothing. Although I will be going to grad school hopefully at UF, but we'll cross that bridge later.
