I would imagine you could buy a different head unit. I know you can get the TRD entune unit in the SR5. They are completely different head units. If you are looking for just a software upgrade, I would say no, but your best bet is ask the dealer. I am sure they would be glad to sell you the built in nav unit, if even available right now.

Your entune will automatically update itself once it gets on the network. The first thing both my wife's and my 2016 Toyotas did once they were attached to the internet was update via the internet. I have the JBL in the 2016 TRD Off Road while my wife has the 2016 Rav4 Hybrid.

Sean, do you mean the enTune needs to be connected to a wireless network with Internet access in order for it to update? Or do you mean once it establishes a satellite connection when you turn it on?

OP, did you mean upgrade as in get entune premium, or update as explained in post #3? When I saw you have an SR and you said upgrade I figured you wanted the more advanced entune systems. If you just need an update, yes, that is easy.

I was talking about an upgrade. However, I thought my taco would just update my system whenever one was avaliable

You should have the entune app installed on your mobile device, and have your device Bluetooth connected to your car. Entune will then download an update. Sorry if I confused the OP's Upgrade vs. Update question. I was answering the update question.

OP has a SR, which does NOT have the Entune App suite, (so no phone app able to connect to it) which leads to his original question to upGRADE.

I did this and while I am not certain, I believe just the apps get updated when you connect with Entune, not the head unit itself.

O.k. guys, I did a little research and this is what I came up with. Now don't take this as the hard truth, because I did find all this on the internet, but it does make sense. It seems as though the entune premium units use a different antenna to receive the gps signal(I believe that), so, if you were to change out head units you will also need to change the shark fin antenna to a gps fin( which could run around 200 dollars).
Another thing is the units are linked by serial number to vin, which means if you did this swap at home and tried to set up the app on your phone, it would not allow you because your vin shows it to be a basic non app suite unit. ( Makes a little sense, but should be allowed to register new unit with vin) This means a trip to the dealer and probably hours on the phone with toyota to get your new head unit registered with your vin. So, it seems to be a possibility, just could be costly and time consuming.

As far as guys talking about the system update, if an update is available you will receive a message on your screen and it will give you further directions. I could not get clarification on whether you need to be connected to your phone or if it receives the signal through the antenna. The first 2016 I went and test drive needed to update when we started the truck, but the salesman had already paired his phone to it earlier and it was a TRD sport, so I can't verify anything on the basic entune systems.

Car max posts their VIN's on their website, you could always hijack one of theirs.

Me personally, if I was going to upgrade my head unit, I would go with an aftermarket head unit. For the price that a dealership is more than likely going to charge, I'm sure I could get one at Crutchfield with better features and interface. Plus, the sound would be better since Toyota detunes their radios to not blow the OEM speakers.

@Rgcam Ive been looking into this too, as I have an SR. Good system for a base unit, but it could use a bit more power and I have a powered sub just sitting around - best solution in the research I did is to add a Alpine Power Pack - 150 bucks, You keep the stock head unit and all its features (back up cam, bluetooth, mic, handsfree) and can install this behind the stock head unit AND wire it into the head unit power cable to keep from having to run a separate power wire.

Best option IMO if youre on a budget.

Trying to figure out how to add two amplifiers a sub and replace door speakers without the tacotune. I have a 2016 trd 4dr w jbl system and nav...
I had the installation scheduled for this morning as a trade out for a bunch of other audio gear I had leftover from other vehicles and he told me it was going to cost another 350 in special order materials in the form of that tacotune box.
Options? Anything cheaper? Does it bypass the stock amp?

I'm out of my realm on this stuff. I like good sound, but I'd pay up for someone to have done the work. I'd hate to mis-match stuff.
