Roof is best, but not everyone can mount an antenna up there.

Good option. I have seen a few good mounts on racks. I am a few years away from having a rack. I use to have mine mounted on a bed bar, great reception. Since adding a shell, I use a hood mount for APRS/HT as 2nd radio (used rarely). Also have a tailgate mount for my primary radio.

Life without a sunroof gives you so many more options. But living in Phoenix, I love opening my sunroof to vent the truck.

    Yes.
I like that the sunroof works as a vent, However I dislike how much the sun light heats the sliding shade inside.
here in Texas I'd never open it. I'm 15 degrees closer to the sun here than where I grew up and I still haven't adjusted to how freaking bright it is. :)

I don't have a sliding shade, mine is a clip in. Kinda weird, but does a great job of blocking the heat. I want to get a solar panel and put it there.

Thinking of doing an APRS mobile setup. Right now I'm leaning towards a kenwood tm-d710ga. Interface looks more appealing for me. (not a huge fan of touch screen) Any thoughts? Suggestions on other units?

Sweet. Good to hear. I heard there were issues of either side of the radio going deaf because of the high/low pass filters going bad. You know if that problem was fixed? I heard this from an operator while I was talking to him at a gas station and said he had it happen to him twice.

Go over to Yahoo Groups, there is one for the 710. HAMs seem to hold on to old tech as long as possible.

Hey @Lars What brand is your stub dual/band antenna on the roof? I found one on Amazon for $22 but the reviews say the SWR is way high. Also what is the real name for those stub antennas? I see LAIRD calls it the phantom.

    Yes.
the little one in the middle of the roof isn't dual band, it's 70cm only. Brand it pctel. I recently replaced it with a 1/4 wave from Tram which is only about 1/4" longer and works as well if not better.

I've never had an 857D before. I think it's time I finally get one as everyone I know loves theirs.

Nice, thanks I will definitely check it out. Crossband repeat could have some cool uses. Its like my own little repeater.
