How hard is it to change a prerunner to 4X4

    Is it first of all possible to change over and is it worth all of the hassel to do? It looks like I will be keeping this truck for a while and I do a fair amount of off roading, but need the 4X4. Getting stuck usually in the sand is a drag. Could any one out there help? Thanks

    Its not hard doing the swap, just hard and time consuming sourcing out all the necessary parts.

    I'd also recommend selling the Prerunner and buy a 4x4.

    Huy is right...in and of itself the swap is not hard

    the problem is sourcing all of these parts

    1. 4x4 tranny w/t-case and shifter
    2. front diff w/ front mount & mounting brackets
    3. spindles/hubs
    4. cv axles
    5. front d-shaft
    6. 4X4 Rear D-shaft (it's about 11 inches shorter than the 2WD)
    7. Transmission Mount on crossmember (2WD is different)
    8. Floor shifter plate (you can try to cut yours but I found it easier to just get a 4WD one)
    9. 4WD shifter boots (one is rubber that goes under the truck and the other is fabric for the interior)
    10. Interior plastics
    11. Speed sensor (some 4WD trannys dont come with one)

    Don't listen to them.. It's Super Easy.. for $100 Ill sell you my Mudflaps off of my 4x4.. you install them on your truck.. and Poof to the untrained eye you have a 4x4... also removing the PreRunner Eblem off of the back

    If you're someone who's mechanically inclined and very familiar with vehicles and how they work, PLUS having garage space and bookoo amounts of tools available at your fingertips....it's something you could do.

    But chances are....

    If you gotta ask "How hard is it?" - then you're probably biting off more than you can chew.

    If you don't have any idea on HOW do to it....then sell the prerunner and buy a 4X4 or start doing research on LOCKERS.

    Real Easy actually... go to the dealer... find a salesmen and say this exactly. "I'm made a huge mistake... I thought a Prerunner would have worked for me but now I regret my stupid decision, I'd like to trade this in for a 4WD."

    It will save you money and time by just trading it in

    sometimes its not easy for people to just up and change their vehicle

    be it credit...or add-ons...or whatever...

    and janster...id disagree about if you have to ask then its not for you

    Hillbilly did his in his driveway with...for the most part...basic tools...you might need to buy a jack and have a buddy...but its not extremely difficult mechanically

    I guess... probably should have thought that thru when he bought the prerunner. Honestly its more a pain in the ass then most would guess, I personally reccommend trading it in, otherwise, its going to be more expensive (unless of course you can do all the labor yourself).

    4WD ftw...

    his needs or finances may not have supported buying a 4x4 at the time...or maybe he was given the truck

    and on an 02...its not necessarily going to be "cheaper" to trade it in and get stuck in another car note for 3/4/5 years

    $2000 to get 4wd...with possibly manual hubs...and the satisfaction of doing something yourself vs. $30K for a new truck and having to go thru the mod process again

    +1 for attempting the swap yourself




    OP...there are several threads on ttora concerning these conversions and the info is pretty readily avail when youre ready to do the swap

    the swap is not "plug and play" you are better off just selling your truck and buying a 4x4, don't mess up a perfectly good truck by trying to swap it over, sell it while you can get some $$ for it and buy you a 4x4. THIS IS NOT AN EASY SWAP!!
