Should I buy this bow?

One of my buddies is wondering if i wanted to buy one of his bows. it's one of the first bear bows that came out.
im right handed and its a lefty bow but he said i could probably get accustomed to it. Full set of nice arrows, broadheads that have never been used before. New strings. True glow sights. and a whisker arrow rest.
the only thing i have to do is get the draw length adjusted for me because i have shorter arms.

all this for 300 bucks, deal or no deal?

You can get a brand new bow that is 30years newer, fits you perfect, and comes with all the accesories for $300-$450.

Personally I'd say your friend is not much of a friend for offering you that deal especially if the bow is one of the 1st Bear bows to come out.... assuming it's a compound. Recurve (depending on which model) may be worth that if it's in "Perfect" condition.

 

No man I know nothing of bows but that seems bad. Also you have to go oppo and can be right handed. Why would you want a bow that you can shoot correctly.

 

NO!! unless you are right handed and left eye dominant, and even that will be marginal.

first bear? that is ancient anyways. you could get a 5-year old bow for cheap! outdoor life magazine rated a mission bow as a "best buy!" mission............cannot remember the model. but fully set up is around $400. all you need is arrows, and a release. NEW! mission is made by Mathews (i think). the bow will fit, will be right handed...warrantied. if a bow fits, and shoots well from your body, it is truly magical. accurate arrow flinging is 100% about consistency in form. you have to repeat the same moves over and over. you cannot do this with a bow that doesnt fit.

 

DO not BUY a Lefty bow if your righty. It will screw you up bad. Go to a reputable archery shop and get FITTED for a bow ON the LAST DAY of archery season. That way you have a year to get proficient. Every one has a different draw length. Then you need to see how much weight you can pull. The standard accepted MINIMUM weight for hunting deer is #35, If you cant pull the bow then dont buy it. Yes Iam shouting because I have seen people do this, Give up after 1/2 hour of tracking and try to gut shoot another deer

 

The draw length and draw weight are very important plus i wonder if you could get good being a switch up.

 

yeah...........pass on getting that bow. even finding a decent used one at a pawn shop to start with will be better than getting something ancient and that may not be in that good of shape. then....get your draw length measured, and get the bow set for that.

 

That wouldnt make a whole lot of since. If you wanted to buy a bowling ball would you go out and buy one for the wrong hand just because its a good deal.

That would be just plain stupid in my opinion.

He's your buddy? Wow... an outdated bow and marginal accessories, all that for $300? And to think he's willing to sell you a left handed bow knowing that you are right handed. Man, you need to pick better buddies.

I'll go out on a limb and offer this advice... don't leave that buddy alone with your gal.

Most pro shops will let you shoot b4 you buy. A first bow should be a compromise on riser design... not too much reflex with a modest ATA (axle to axle) and a 7 inch + brace height.

That equates to shootability. Have a qualified archery tech set the bow up for your characteristics. Not only draw length needs to be taken into consideration. If the guy behind the counter tries to sell you the fastest, latest and greatest, chances are he isn't the guy to be dealing with.

Choose a reputable dealer, (good ranges will have good used bows as well), and you will be out the door with solid, modern equipment for $300 [used] or slightly more, [500 to 700] new.

Big companies like Bowtech, Mathews, Hoyt, PSE, and Martin lead sales... all of which make bows that shoot better than any person can shoot. The shooting vise proves it time and again.

I've owned them all and find that a quality bow that fits YOU will shoot better in your hand than one that costs considerably more.

you are crazy, i have alot of friends that tried that route. they are fun to shoot, but your range is shortened up so much, that is why i don't like them. it is hard enough to shoot one with a compound bow. as much work as i do getting everything ready, stands, plots, etc. i want the best possiable chance. i love bow hunting, but i will always use a compund, nothing better than busting a deer at 40 yards plus. trying something like that with a traditional, is like throwing a hail mary. long live the dark side, hee, hee.

 

Actually, I shot compound for years, but it became more of a mechanical thing than a real hunting experience, at least for me. The joy of hunting came back once I went back to traditional. It is much harder to become proficient without sights, and it demands ongoing practice, but once you get there, you'll discover a new way to hunt.

do you live in hawaii ? i went there several years ago, before i went i saw these shows of people hunting wild goats and axis deer there. which islands are they on. i went to the big island, oahu, and maui. i never saw any. it looked kind of fun.

 

Live on Oahu, mostly pigs and birds here. The other islands have axis deer, wild cattle, mouflon sheep, turkey, game birds, and pigs too. Maui has the largest deer herds, The big island has the most area for hunting.
I've got family in Goldsboro, really enjoy visiting there. North Carolina is awesome.

 

have you hunted any on the islands ? is it mostly fenced in or free roaming or mixed. i am about 45 minutes from goldsboro. n.c. is nice but it can't hold a flame to oahu.

 

I have to agree this is not a bow you would use, too many problems.
Go to an archery store find one that is a few years old in the not the latest and greatest rack. They are still fantastic.
Have the shop fit it to you. Draw length, weight you are comfortable with to start, correct arrows, and all the accessories you want, sights, release ect.
Yes I am a sissy and like the new fangled cams and gadgets.

You may spend more to start but it will be comfortable and you will get better faster.

I still have a Martin Cougar 2000 and it shoots better than I can.
