If you haven't checked out the Salinas missions it's worth the trip. Quarai and Abo are unique with their red rock, and Gran Quivera is the largest, as well as the longest drive. For any of you with road bikes, it's also a good day trip, which is how I've visited them most times. Quarai's my favorite, especially early in the day when it's cool and very peaceful. But watch out for rattlers warming up in the sun!

A coworker had just mentioned this area today. He's from there and said its worth checking out for sure.

The only way that you couldn't do Capilla Peak in 2WD would be if there was snow. It's pretty tame otherwise. I was wondering to myself when I saw those turkeys when the season would open this year... We saw a total of 8 or 9 birds.

I'm curious if they are really a problem, because they even had signs posted around the Quarai site.

Architecture, wildlife, fossils, history, views, and maybe some hiking... you can't pack much more than that into a day trip. We just need to find a good place nearby for some local eats/brews.

Mountainair has a restaurant next to the hotel. Food not bad for a small town.

Keep an eye on the thread for the group trips... we always post up an invite / roll call. Many of the trips that I post are solo missions, or outings with my family. When I head out by myself I usually appreciate company, but the trips are often last minute.

    Will do.

AWESOME... I've been waiting to see that pic. I roll so hard.
    Soon....

I knew I was in for a nasty drive out. Greasy clay mud. The truck slid into a big gully on the way out and almost layed over on the driver side... took both lockers to drive out. There are parts of this truck that will never be clean again after this weekend...

Ah, highway 550 north to Bloomfield... once you get past Cuba you should have some caffeine handy, as that is one boring stretch of highway. It always makes me sleepy.

The new wheels look good on the Tacoma.
