    What haven’t I changed?
All this talk about HAM almost has me motivated enough to prep for the test and make the jump. Almost.

@odomandr you mentioned wanting to upgrade to a unit with APRS. Any recommendations? Some of them look pretty sweet, especially the ones with remote faceplates that can be mounted below the AC controls, but they seem pretty spendy

So guys with HAM radios, have you found yourself in a situation where the HAM was actually necessary? Where a CB radio would have been useless? Seems like a CB radio is plenty for what most of us need a radio for..

I have a simple $25 handheld ham, which doesnt have all the fancy aprs functions, but as far as clarity and usefulness, the HAM is so much clearer and easier to use than the CB. Its like talking on a cell phone vs the CB, cost was much less than the CB, if I needed to hit a repeater in an emergency situtaion, I would have that capability, and you never have a problem with catching random radio traffic from another group. Only downside is not many people have them, so I end up having both on during trail runs.

But if a group goes out and everyone is equipped with both... you can guess which ones are used.

I was riding the kokopelli and split off to shower while a few trucks ran rose garden. They got hung up running it and delayed meeting a larger group in town. Rather than sending someone to help, we reached them from moab and found out they were under control but delayed

Range is effectively unlimited if you're in range of a repeater.

30 -40 miles I'd guess. Not sure where they were exactly when we got ahold of them

First step is taking the test and getting licensed. After that, get a radio :) @odomandr would know much more about the radio/frequency stuff.. I just know how to put in the frequency and push the talk button.
