Manual trans grind after replacing oil/fluid

Having a problem with my 2005 Tacoma, V6, 4WD, Manual trans.
I just replaced the manual transmission oil. I used what the manual calls for (

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90, GL4/GL5)
It now grinds slightly when shifting from second to third gear.
The problem goes away after I've been driving for a few miles.
Any thoughts? Is this normal? Will it go away?

I'd say it's not normal.

Are you sure it is full? Was vehicle level F-R and side to side when filling?

Curious what brand lubricant you used as well. Not that that should matter too much, but I have seen different brands have different results in other gearboxes.

 

Drain it and fill with a GL4 rated lube, not a GL4/GL5 - something like Redline MT90.

Thanks. Yup, it was as level as I could get it. I used Lucas Oil.

 

If it calls for a GL4 as @landphil suggests, he's right, don't use the 'dual' stuff. Which really isn't.

Ford XT-M5-QS. Over the counter at your Ford dealer. Call ahead, they may not have it in stock unless they support a lot of SVO guys. Be sure they give you that exact number, there are a couple of others that are close.

It's not cheap, but it is fantastic.

Something does not make sense. The '05 owners manual states:

Oil type: Gear Oil API GL-4 or GL-5 Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75W- 90

I find it hard to believe the Lucas product is the problem.

I would recheck the gear oil level in your transmission. Ensure it's on a level surface. Remove fill plug and if nothing at all comes out, starting filling slowly until you get some gear oil coming out the fill plug. You don't want a Niagra Falls scenario, but the best way in my opinion to know a manual transmission/differential is full is to fill it until you get some fluid coming out the fill area. Let it settle to a trickle; then reinstall fill hole plug.

 

The later years call for GL-4 specifically. Might be worth while to find a GL-4 specific fluid and see if it fixes it.

I've seen several notchy boxes that Redline, RP, Mobil 1 did not resolve (helped, but not cured) turn to butta with this stuff.

Suspect the change was due to syncro wear. (maybe @gearcruncher has some history on that?) GL4 is easier on the brass/bronze.

Straight GL4 isn't that easy to run down anymore. Most OTC product are 4/5

 

I saw that and can read thanks... I was pointing out that in the newer years it calls for only GL-4, not "or" GL-5 like the older years. So Toyota changed something.

 

Interesting. I had the opposite problem with a Nissan truck a few years ago. It would grind a bit when shifting to first from a stop. Put in Redline MT90 and the problem went away. From what I have read over the years, I would not use GL-5 in a manual transmission that I want to last beyond the warranty.

 

I never was a fan of that Lucas stuff, about 10 years ago I was doing routine maintenance on my Ex's Geo and gave her a list of stuff to buy. Anyway she came back with that Lucas stuff and I didn't feel like returning it, needless to say I was replacing the transmission a few weeks later.

 

So you are saying you put in the correct type and weight Lucas product and it killed your transmission in two weeks?

 

Yes, if memory serves it called for 75-90 GL-4 and she came back with that Lucas GL-4/-5 shit, I put it in against my better judgment and the trans crapped out a few weeks later, that is a helluva coincidence.

 

Others may not agree, but I don't consider GL4/5 to be the same as GL4 and would not interchange them. It's quite possible it was the oil and it could have been coincidence.

This is one of the articles I've based my gear oil selection on over the last few years. I'm not sure any GL4/5 oil is going to be safe in something that requires GL4. http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

 

Well, that was my fault for sending her to the part store to pick everything up. I would have never bought that Lucas Garbage and like I said it would have been a helluva coincidence for the trans to fail a few weeks later.

 

If you put the wrong type oil in, GL4/5 instead of GL4, why would that be the oil's fault? Whether it's garbage or not you should at least put in the correct type oil, otherwise you can expect problems.

To clarify...
The Tacoma manual for my year (2005) as well as manuals for 2006 & 2007 says to use: "Gear Oil API GL-4 or GL-5, 75W- 90"

The spec sheet for this oil says it is up to standard on GL-5 and MT-1. The bottle says it is up to standard on both GL-4 and GL-5.
So, it seems like it is the right stuff for the right application.
I think I'll give it a week, take it easy on the shift and see if it settles in. If not, I'll try the other product mentioned above.

It's your call, but I'd still drain it ASAP. The sulphur used as an extreme pressure additive in GL5 is hard on brass and bronze synchro's, and in my experiences, GL5 never works well in a manual transmission. Why Toyota specifies GL5 as an option is beyond me. It's only two quarts of oil.

 

Drain it and put in redline mt90 now.
It made the shifts on my 6 speed smoother in every gear esp. 1st. To 2 nd.
