OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

I dont remember the size, but it was a pilot bearing puller, 2 jaw. There was a kit that had pullers similar in design to the ECGS one, but multiple sizes, that one did not want to fit for me, so I got the pilot bearing puller, was a smaller size. That fit onto the end of the slide hammer that i rented separately.

 

The new bushing you get should get you close enough to the ID.

 

Yup. Going to swing buy the parts store on the way home and measure a new needle bearing. Thanks

Bearing O.D. Is 1.594" or 1 19/32"
I.D. Is 1.390" or 1 25/64" for those still wondering. I can measure the ECGS tool too if anyone needs the measurement off of it.

I've done 5 or 6 of these needle bearings and used this puller on the first one but was a PITA because you can't get it the exact size you need it because of how thin the bearing is and it moves around while your slide hammering it. I used the ECGS puller on all the others because it's easier to maneuver. I'd recommend a puller like the ECGS tool that stays stationary while you wrench it out. But if it's the only thing you can find it will work...eventually. Lol

 

I'm actually headed to my companies machine shop now to see what they have laying around... I may be able to put something together that is similar to the ECGS tool. I'll just have to make width and thickness adjustments if the OTC version isn't working.

 

Does anyone know how hard it would be to remove a ECGS bushing (if they had to). It's longer so don't know if you could get a puller behind it.

 

Probably not that hard the new bushing doesn't sit any farther in then the bearing even though it's longer it sits farther out of the carrier

 

@Tacoman11 got it. Also, while driving my ECGS bushing in, I periodically stopped to check for space between the bushing and the spider gear. Made sure I felt enough space to fit the bearing puller if I ever need to get the bushing out.

 

Correct. You don't want the bushing riding too close to the gears. The inside of the bushing should be flush with the inside of the carrier. All the bushing does it hold the cv still while its spinning. Plus like you said if you ever needed to pull it back out...

 

Wasn't sure I thought I saw a video that showed the person driving it in flush with the outside just past the seal. I guess I shall find out when I get mine in.

 

Are you going to be putting the lift back on once the bushing is in?

 

It shouldn't matter I go flush with the inside but either way as long as it's not too close to the gear it should be fine. Also make sure you put the bushing in the correct way. There is a right way and a wrong way to install it

 All bushings are for the driver’s side of vehicle only. The passenger side uses a ball bearing that normally does not go bad.
 If you have a vibration and put the vehicle in 4wd and it goes away you likely have a bad needle bearing and need the bushing.

Question: Do I need to replace my CV axle when I replace the needle bearing? Answer: No, unless your CV joint is damaged or pitted upon removal. Question: How far do I drive in the bushing? The steel face protects the bushing while it is being driven in Question: Do I need the axle seal? Answer: We recommend replacing the seal as they are generally damaged upon removal. OIL SEAL IF NEEDED... Found the seal for $7.45 a little cheaper than the $20.00 ECGS is asking for one. It was online though. Not sure what the dealer is asking for one. Then you could go to a parts store.

 

+1 the ECGS seal is overpriced i get national/federal mogul at parts stores for around $6-7

 

PLEASE forgive me for not knowing and not reading through 174 pages. But, is there a community removal tool that is being sent around? Don't want to spend $60 if I don't have to... TIA
