What kind of things, to narrow our scope?

    Spend big money?

    Have fun with wiring diagrams?

    Wax and polish?

    Maintenance and love?

I don't really wanna spend a ton at a time, I'm a freshman in college so I could spend $200 a month maybe? I'm not very gifted when it comes to working on vehicles

    Lift.
    Tires.
Get rid of those ugly nerf bars (sorry just had to). Maybe some sliders instead?
    Muffler swap maybe(borla ftw)
    Lights. As in led bar.
Tint. Plus visor tint strip(to help with led bar glare, and sun of course)
    Projector retro maybe.

If nothing else, lift and Tires. Makes a world of difference in a 1st gen. Both with looks and function. I don't even look twice when I see a non lifted tacoma anymore. Heh. When I do I'm like, gawd. Hard to imagine mine w/o.

Thats going to be your standard TW response; it is a site for off-roading enthusiasts even more than Tacoma enthusiasts. My advice; just start reading whats on here. You'll not be bored for months, and will know all of your options.

Honestly, if you are in college with a limited budget, I would check out the maintenance schedule and make sure it is all squared away first. Is that a V6, and if so, how many miles? Timing belt is due at 120k miles, and makes sense to do the water pump too. Could cost about $600 parts an labor. Make sure you have that covered.

Also, have you checked your truck for the lower ball joint recall? If these fail, in can be extremely dangerous/deadly. You can look up or call any Toyota dealer and give them your VIN, and they will tell you if your truck is affected. Free work, and you'll get a free alignment, and you won't die.

After that, look into new suspension. The stock suspension is weak, especially if you have high mileage on it, and investing in new shocks, coils, and leafs will completely change your truck's manner on the road, and make it more fun to drive. Probably about $1000 for a decent upgrade.

It has 183,000 and It hasn't been replaced so I will probably do that on my next paycheck. Everything else looked good when I got it inspected last month for oil change. It was well taken care of by the previous owner who I think was an older gentleman

Good news on the previous owner. Yeah, I'd get on that. These are really easy vehicles to work on, so if you are interested in improving your skills, this is the vehicle to do it on. Just by doing basic maintenance (not T belt).

Redline hood struts are great, but you have to be careful to not drill through your hood.

LED interior light bulb swaps can be inexpensive and cool.

    Is this a Pre-runner or a 4x4?

Do you intend to offroad much?
