I can't say that I've ever personally had water sucked in through my axle seals, I just know that that's the potential problem with a one way breather that was explained to me.

I do know that when I removed my breather there was a sharp intake of air indicating that there was a vacuum within the diff.

It makes sense to me to install a two way breather up out of harms way so that the pressure (or vacuum) can always equalize inside the diff. If positive pressure built up slowly from heat in the diff can blow the seals out it stands to reason that negative pressure created almost instantly by submerging in water could blow the seals "in".

I forget what vehicle the breather I used was originally intended for but I know it was two way (verified suck and blow :D) and I put mine high up in the driver side taillight pocket. I guess with a two way breather you maybe don't even need a "breather" and could use a filter of some sort instead or even leave it open if you were certain nothing would get into it.

When I do the breather mod, I'm relocating it to my behind my gas cap door and use the two-way.

As long as it's not leaking air or pushing against the tire i should be good right? No observable cracks near it.

So that you allow air back in when the diff cools. The idea being that you don't create negative pressure and suck water in through the axle seals. If the one way breather works, and doesn't let air (or water) in to the diff then I don't see a reason to relocate it. Unless I'm missing something, the idea is to put in a two way breather so the diff can equalize pressure both ways and then you need to relocate it so it doesn't suck in water.

18 miles around the Kokopelli loops, reminded me of the White Rim trail.

4.5 miles at 18 Road, had to do a PBR run since i haven't been out here before.

I thought the issue was that the one way breather if exposed to deep water and cooling at the same time risked sucking water back in as it blew off pressure. Never saw anything on the seals until you provided that info today. Mine has been like this since 2007 with no water in the rear. Must not be an issue.
