Since you're presumably moving it to a location that will never suck water in:

It makes sense to me to install a two way breather up out of harms way so that the pressure (or vacuum) can always equalize inside the diff. If positive pressure built up slowly from heat in the diff can blow the seals out it stands to reason that negative pressure created almost instantly by submerging in water could blow the seals "in".

Like Old Brett said... over time and use the one way breather can get crudded up and stop working efficiently.

I always saw this mod as reassurance that the diff will always breathe properly.

Thanks, i meant to call on my way out here since I'm going to be over 20k by the time i get back. I'll call tomorrow if i get a chance.

I've seen the zip tie mod to take out the slack in the steering column but haven't tried it yet. It was another thing i complained about at 20 miles but was told it was normal.

I did the mod about 6 months after buying the truck. The stock breather is all the way up in the gas door. Hasn't seen much crud. It has not been an issue for 9 years.

As far as I know, the 2nd gen diff breather valve is NOT one way. It's mostly open and designed to suck shut during a rapid pressure change - to avoid pulling in water. I tested mine and one or two others, and that's how they function. You could suck or blow air through them, but if you pulled air fast enough it would close up. A one way wouldn't be a breather, and wouldn't make any sense because the first time you heat things up and push all the air out, you just create a vacuum that would never go away. Air has to get back in somehow. The concern I always read was, as already stated, if it seals up like a cold water crossing or something and does start pulling in, it would do so through axle seals since those become the theoretical weak point. But as others have already pointed out, it takes some pretty specific circumstances to get water in the diff. I've seen a few posts of people who'd done it, and in the vast majority of cases they were trying to use their truck as a submarine/amphibious assault vehicle.

For the guy who asked, if you really want to check just pull the fill plug and check the top. If you've had water contamination, you'll know pretty quick. And you may just want to change the fluid anyway depending on your mileage and such. If you convert to synth it can get kind of expensive, but it definitely isn't hard and expensive is relative. I'd done a few easy water crossings prior to extending mine and had no issues when I changed the fluid the first time. I think I'd done it by the time my avatar was taken though (which is a whole different class of 'water').

Also everyone always talks about doing the rear. Nobody ever seems to bother doing the front or the TC, whichever one isn't vented in the engine bay (myself included).

@aero3685 You can download all the 24k USGS quad sheets (or even the 100k if you want those), georeferenced, from the USDA Geospatial Data Gateway. You can grab them by county or state, but state is probably too big for a single download. I believe somewhere on the USGS site you can download all of them individually or by map selection (National Atlas maybe?). The problem with both methods is we're talking about high-quality scan data in tiff format, which is probably too large to use on your portable device. Things like Avenza and such are optimized for mobile use. Some of the PDFs are even vector, based off the USGS DLG info (which is what they use to make the raster maps) because vector is much, much smaller than raster. The stuff you buy from Garmin is all vector, not the actual quad sheet scans. Or it was (the 24k data I have is).

@acidchylde the new garmin rinos can be loaded with 24k or 100k maps. I'm not sure about the other stuff they make.

Never mind read your post again that's what you said. :D
