Dude your rig is awseome! It was the one that got me wanting to build an overland tacoma and now an overland 4runner.

 

Yeah of course man. My favorite first gen. Glad it went to a good home!

 

My buddy used plastic sheets and got them linexed so they are weather and scratch proof. Really nice.

 

80-20 extruded aluminum is great to work with. I've built a drawer for my bed and this storage for the back of my cab.

What rear bumper is that? I like the foldout table, it looks sturdier than the ones I'm used to seeing.

 

You removed the core support? Did you replace it with a custom tube support? I was under the impression that you kinda need that...

 

Nah, it's optional. Totally removed it and did an engine cage. I had to because the frame rails twisted so much on hard hits it was pinching my motor and mashing the motor mounts into the frame like a big nutcracker.

 

Acutally mine is built by Billy @Bruteforce Fab He does really good work.

yeah i saved up for a long time and finally just pulled the trigger. Ive had it for like 2 months now and i love it. Loads of compliments from local peeps.

 

Yes, the radiator and condenser are attached to the engine cage, along with the headlights, grill, and fiberglass fenders. It shifted the weight balance a lot more than expected, and it flies a lot better now. The inner fenders are heavy multi layered sheetmetal designed to pass crash safety tests. I feel a lot better crashing my pile than a stock one. Since then I've added more weight to the rear so it handles like a BMW, perfect neutral steer 4 wheel drift when you pitch it into the corners.

 

Ah, very cool! I've been thinking about doing an engine cage eventually, but for now I'm waiting for the stock core support to start to fall apart haha.

 

Oh, it's totally overkill, but imagine the possibilities... You could probably sit on that thing haha

Hey guys,started flipping through this thread and realized this is where I'll be spending most of my time haha.
Just picked up my 3rd round of Tacoma goodness with the previous two logging daily driver and motorbike hauling duties. This one will share the same functions, but now that I'm out of Ohio there is a whole new world of opportunity to explore, so what better way to do it than an Expo style build right?

Plans are pretty simple because I want to try and keep this as light weight as possible and I need functionality of the bed for bikes as well as enough grunt to tow 3500lbs of race car and trailer on occasion. That being said, I'm on the hunt for a Softopper in favor of the existing badass cap (which I would keep if I didn't need the bed). Wheels and tires are next on the list. Then some Pelfrey Aluminum armor. I don't mind beating the stuff up, I just need it light and out of the way for approach / departure. After that just little odds and ends that come in handy out on the trail.
