New Member here with a few questions

Hi, I'm in the market for a New Tacoma . This is going to be my first Truck and want to do it right the first time. I was at a the toyota website and build my own. Question is what is the difference betweenn a

TRD Sport 4x4 and TRD off road 4x4 ?
Pros and cons between two models ?
is one better than the other? also I would like to keep it max @36k is that even realistic?

I kinda like the scoop hood on the sport but at the same time likes the crawl feature on the off road.

Basically the sport has an open diff and the off road has a locking rear diff, a-trac, crawl control. If you are gonna go serious off roading, the "off road" model is a must. If not the 'sport' will be great for most off road applications. You can probably find someone to trade hoods with who wants to ditch their scoop. I saw someone on the forum a few days ago who wanted to trade for a non scoop hood.

Thanks, Johnny. I plan on doing off roading but nothing serious. It will be my daily driver but like to go to blm lands to go target shooting with friends. Id rather have 4wd and not need it than not have it and needs it.

any other pros and cons?

 

I have a 4x4 sport. Not planning on doing any hardcore off-roading. Just maybe some dirty muddy hilly non-paved roads. I'd highly recommend the manual transmission if you can drive it simply because many people have been disliking the way the auto tranny shifts in the 16s. I love my manual transmission. Sounds like the sport is the way to go for you. Also, good luck keeping it under 36k after title, taxes, and fees. I was just above 36k out the door. You may need a sport without the tow package and tonneau cover to accomplish that.

 

And good luck finding a TRD without a tow package.

 

With the sport you can get a long bed, which is not an option for the off road (I wanted the shorter wheel base). Aside from that they are pretty much equal.

 

TRD OffRoad FTW. The sport is a waste of money. Buy the OffRoad which gives you all the goodies (crawl, lockers, atrac, etc) and buy/trade a hood skewp off another member on here. Also, get the towing package. And also shoot for a manual transmission if you can. Members with auto transmissions report low tranny fluid from factory, bad and annoying shifts, and complete transmission failure. Good luck and welcome to TW.

 

Im actually going for the short bed.

Tow package is a must don't care about the cover. and a little bit over 36k is prolly manageable as long its otd price.

seems like sport package will do the job but not set in stone yet

btw: double cab with a Sb is whats peaking my interest right now, still has to do some research

hmmm, manual versus auto , LOL. I'm in California and freaking traffic anytime of the day. i get lazy sometimes hahaha. another thing to consider

 

In my opinion it is. You're paying thousands of extra dollars for a hood scoop. And I think the rear bumper painted. That's it. You might as well buy an SR5 and add that stuff for a few hundred bucks. That's just my opinion, not looking to start wars or burn bridges.

I believe the SR5 and Sport have the same shocks but the sport has "sport tuned suspension". The OffRoad comes with Bilstein shocks.

It's all about preference. I'd test drive both in bumpy city streets and smooth freeway drives to get a good feel.

Edit: There's also a good deal of 2016 Tacoma reviews on YouTube and almost all of them say something about the suspension. But then again, you can't feel the suspension over a video.

The Tacoma came in two TRD packages: Sport and Off-Road. The Sport is targeted more towards improved road performance, while the Off-Road is more geared towards the off-road enthusiast. Both are available in 2WD or 4WD, with rear electronic locking differential available in the Off-Road model.

The TRD Sport package comes in two levels. The first level has a color-matched grille, color-matched front/rear bumpers, color-matched door handles, color-matched mirrors, Bilstein shocks/struts, TRD interior, hood with scoop, A/C inverter in the bed, bed rails with cleats, stainless steel exhaust tip and 17" wheels. The second level includes the above and also adds a towing package, oil and transmission coolers, heavy-duty high output alternator, and an aluminum skid plate.[citation needed]The 2005 to 2008 model years came with a mechanical true limited slip locking differential. The 2009 model year onwards has an open differential with a brake assisted "automatic limited slip" rear differential, similar to a VSC system.[citation needed]

The TRD Off-Road package includes a chrome rear bumper, 16" wheels, skid plates, chrome grille, locking rear differential and no hood scoop. Progressive rate springs are included, along with A-TRAC, Hill Descent assist(Automatic only) and Hill Start assist (six speed only). The Off-Road package has a smaller diameter roll bar compared to the Sport package, which gives the Off-Road more wheel articulation and a smoother ride but allows for more body roll. All-Terrain tires and a heavy duty front tow hook complete the package. This package is not available in Double Cab models with long-bed configuration.[citation needed]

 

Just make sure you get the manual transmission.
