How exactly would one do this?

I have this joystick retrofitted as my shifter. I figured out how to wire the buttons to work with my high beams, auxiliary reverse led spot lights, and cruise control. I drilled out the center and took apart the two halves. Inside the stick is a tiny circuit board with mini tact switches behind each button. It was actually very simple to wire. Each tact switch has their own power wire and they're all connected to a common ground. I don't know if all joysticks are the same, but I can't imagine theyd differ that much. I know I know the "didn't happen if no pics" line. But I don't have any pics at the moment so I'll take some today and post them.

That would be so great! thank you! Yea the wiring thing wasn't gonna be much of an issue for me, it was just a matter of how to hide the wires to keep if from looking like a mess

Could you put an extruded tube over the actual stick, then run the wires through that under the console and deal with it there? I would guess you have to heavily modify the bottom of the joystick anyway, so I think it could be worked out?

Since you won't be able to run tons of current through the switches in the stick, run the thinnest cable you can run to relays. Get a tube with an ID big enough to fit over the stock shifter assembly and all the wires with the OD small enough to fit inside the track in the shifter. Use some set screws to keep it centered and not vibrating all over the place. That will keep the appearance looking better than a boot around your shifter.

Obviously don't do the brake light switch crap. Dumb, and if you don't know what you are doing with wiring really don't.

Every control you mentioned will probably need a relay since the internal switches are most likely not able to have any real power thru them. They might not even be rated for 12 VDC at the current needed to power a relay for that matter...

    In summary:

    Don't

Yeah, but personally I don't want to use cheap switches probably made for a few mA of current controlling important safety circuits like headlights. If you want to then feel free.

    Edited cuz double quote.

Does anyone know how to install a shifter boot on an automatic. I actually think it'll look pretty good. And all things considered, I appreciate the input but it is my truck, I'm not modding it for anyone but me....

I may be a MECE but I do know a thing or two about wiring from experienceo_O

But yea I don't need alot of convincing to not do the brake light deal. I decided not much longer after posting that it probably wasn't my best idea. Call it mod crazy.

I would think you'd need to cut the gate out, making it a large hole like the manual trans would have, then trim it and fit a boot to the space tapering to your shaft on the shift lever.

sort of reviving this thread... but I'm thinking about doing the same thing. but is it even possible to drill a tiny hole in the housing where the shifter stick goes into, and run a wire through that? looking at some threads about removing the console it looks like there is a housing the shifter is in. is there a way to put a wire down into that, and then out the front of it under the dash? anyone know? :bored:

never mind i just answered my own question. took apart the console down to the shift area. took the gear indicator plate off and bam... you can easily slide a few pieces of wire in between the top of the shift housing and under the gear indicator plate. now all i need to do is figure out how to make a switch in a joy stick... i might just add a non lighted switch... we shall see. if anyone wants pictures of what I'm talking about let me know ill post some showing wire placement through the shift housing.
