285s Tire Opinion

Which is the best tire for the money?

1. BFG All Terrain-

2. Cooper STT

3. Maxxis Bighorn MT Lt


4. Toyo M/T- Although a little out of the price range.

 

I believe it's tough to beat the BF Goodrich product. They've done so well marketing their products. People will always buy used BF Goodrich tires and pay good money for them. I'm not a fan of Les Schwab, so I avoid most of their tire products.

 

It depends what your doing. Depending on my applications, Id go with TOYO M/T or BFG A/T, both excellent tires.

 

they are good all around tires, and if your alignment is correct, the wear nicely.

My last set of 285/75 R16s were on the truck of 45,000 miles...

 

One of those things is not like the others.

Do you wheel enough/in places that "require" a MT?

I have Cooper STTs on my truck right now and I love em.

 

depends on useage. I'd stray away from the bighorns. The toyos are expensive, but seem to last longer than most MTs. I like the coopers for a slightly cheaper alternative and if you dont need a MT, then the BFG ATs are a good choice as well.

 

Go STTs i would go with them if i had it to do again.

 

Coopers STs are what I have been running for the last 90K miles, the first set lasted 70K!
I didnt price other tires but these weren't cheap.

I disnt need the SSTs for my DD.

 

I was just quoted 220 a tire for LT285/70R17 cooper stt's, mounted and balanced. This shop has the lowest prices you can get anywhere unless you get someone on the inside to give you a deal.

 

I'd go with these:



General Grabber AT2's

Look just like the BFG tires, but cheaper.

 

I'd go with the General Grabber AT2's as well. We had those on my wife's Baja and they were great tires.

 

I'd go with the BFGs. The Coopers are a good tire, but I can't stand the way they look.

 

wow surprised no one but me said the maxxis, a bunch of people around here have them and swear buy them, i;m actually ordering a set next week.

 

I'd go with the coopers. I had a set of the st (not stt) and they were the longest lasting tire i've ever owned

I had BFG ATs before and they were great, only expensive for a AT. And I loved them, but I am looking for a little different look maybe this time.
99% On Road, mainly going for looks. But I need good traction at the boat ramp. I want an aggressive look with the 3" Toytec lift I am about to put on. Cooper STTs seem to be getting good reviews.
Toyo is pretty much out of my range. Love the look though.

 

Is it just me or does the STT tread pattern look almost identical to the Toyo M/T just backwards?

Just a sidenote, over half of the offroad show vehicles at this year's SEMA show had Toyo M/T tires. I'm not even exagerating, there must be a reason. Even though they are expensive, looks-wise they are #1 IMHO and they perform good as well.

 

These were rated as the worst a/t tire by consumer reports.
BF goodrich was not on there, not sure why seeing as they are a known a/t tire
Toyo's were like 4th just below michelin a/t2 (WTF is this true?)
Nitto terra's were somewhere around the middle
pirelli scorpions where number 1 (i've never heard of these)
copper discoverers at/r wher way down there. they didn't have the st's

I ussually like and fully trust consumer reports but I think they had different motives for testing these tires than what we want these tires for. They didn't have a section for real off road tires.

 

I didn't check out Consumer Reports, but instead I went with Tire Rack reviews. They rate the Grabbers higher than the BFGoodrich Tires:

put the blackwall out on the Cooper's and the STTs and Toyo's will pretty much have the same pattern.


OP, ever think about the GY DuraTrac?

 

Not on the list but I think worth a look....Hankook. The wifes been running the Dynapro's on her Sequoia for 15k miles. They wear nicely and have performed well in the rain, snow, ice. We've run BFG AT's, Nitto AT's and now these. Hard to beat the BFG's for what we use the rig for but depending on the life of these Hankook's these might beat them. They were cheaper then the BFG's by like $20/tire if I remember correctly. I'm thinking of trying the Hankook MT's for my Tacoma when its time.
