JR high and HS in the 80s, so yeah, I grew up around prince. He wasn't a favorite, but his music was a big part of the 80s. One of my fav songs is Darling Nikki, because I know a Nikki just like the one in the song!

IIRC Prince had a pretty tight hold of what he allowed to be released and played. There is very little of his expansive library on youtube and the Kevin Smith story is pretty telling. If what he says is true... can you imagine all the full length videos and music that he had stored that may never see the light of day? That's a shame since I'm sure some (if not most) would be amazing to hear and see.

He did like to control his material. I recall hearing about that too.

A little off the subject but that is one of the reason's I like youtube so much. It gives artists the freedom and ability to "self produce" themselves rather than have some A&R, record exec's, contract restrictions, etc... to get in the way. Since youtube there have been so many unbelievable musicians to be seen that otherwise we would have never had the access to. There is so much talent in the world and now we (as consumers / fans) can choose what "we" want to see / watch when we want to and not have some music label decide for us. It's a win for the artists and the people that love music.

Agree. Kind of a double edge sword though. As an musician, I like that material can be exposed to a wider audience. But there is also not much protection because of it.
I respect artist like Prince that went out and did a lot of that on his own. Others like that - Radiohead, Phish, etc.
