2nd gen, Anytime-On Rear View Camera with Switch on Dash mod

Just for anyone else that runs into the problem of finding the red reverse wire: Funny enough, I actually pulled the coin tray and went to find the IN1 plug and it wasn't plugged in at all. Nothing has been noticeably wrong with the truck and I've definitely never been in there before, but it was very much unplugged. Anyways, tried testing it with the multimeter and nothing. Went out to the back and found the trailer plug reverse light wire. Traced it back to where it comes into the cab beneath the driver's seat and tapped into that. Only an extra 12 inches of wire or so and pretty accessible. Probably won't work for the rear camera but for wiring external reverse lights, I can't complain.

LOL I quit reading after the first few pages but your switch mod is a waste of time just another hole in your dash all you have to do his splice into the 12 volt remote wire on the back of your head unit should be red with a white stripe that turns on your head unit when your ignition (not the remote wire he would run to an amp)now run that all the way back to the power side of your camera the black wire coming off your camera you ground out anywhere you could find a spot tha
t's not too rusty then you tie into your reverse light and run it all the way up to your head unit where it says camera control or gear selection. Violet with white stripe usally. Don't forget to take the blue wire you're supposed to tie to the parking brake switch and take it directly to ground. Now you have a setup that will turn on the camera when you start the car but when you put it in reverse it will pull up automatically on your screen but you could also monitor your trailer while driving for no switch is required

Question. Instead of doing your method with a SPDT, could you use a SPST? Hear me out. Just use a wire tap to tap into REV, and supply 12v through a switch? Less moving parts. Switch off=regular camera function switch on=12v feed into camera, and it turns on.

 

Remember that you are interrupting the normal signal connection to inject 12V to the HU, but don't want to feed that voltage back to the CPU; and when off, you want normal operation, that is, you want the connection between the CPU and HU in tact. That requires an SPDT.

 

A problem with this approach. When you turn things to "on" you would be back feeding the reverse switch and putting power to your backup lights as you go down the road viewing your camera. You could put a diode into the reverse line to prevent backfeed, but then you are doing more work and adding more stuff.

 

Another problem with this approach is that 12v back to the cpu when the shifter is in any other gear but reverse will trigger a CEL for a faulty Shifter Position Sensor P0705. Ask me how I know.

Yes you can isolate the CPU with a diode but the OP approach works fine too. If you NEED use a SPST switch because you bought a cool one from Aironboard.com, you can use a standard 5 Pin 12v relay and follow my diagram below;

 

I thought about that, but wasn't sure if it would really be an issue. I haven't bought any switch yet as I don't plan to do this mod, but was just curious if the other method would work. Guess not!

 

Very good post! Thank you. I just bought a double pole switch and I am doing this mod this weekend. I am fortunate I have an extra switch hole (covered with a blank) right above that coin holder.

 

I just did this mod. Works like a charm! All I had was a double pole double throw switch so I just used one column of terminals. I also cut and spliced into the red wire, I hope I didn't tater another circuit somewhere. the great thing about this mod is how easy it is to put everything back to stock. I'm going to do the anytime fog light mod next, then the switch to control the DRL's. Thank you for the instructions!

 

Sub'ed all good info great write up guys. Hope to do this one and the anytime fog lights. I want to be able to use those features anytime i want not just when my trucks wants to let me. First thing first though, besides wearing my seat belt how can i kill my seat belt chime. Ive got a 2015 dbl cab LB sport 4x4. really hate that beeper.

 

This is a very clever mod, but is there a practical use for this? I am not hating on it, I just don't see where I would use this even if I did the mod. It's still very cool even if not very useful.

 

I use this nearly every day when parking in my garage which has only 18" longer than my DCSB. I press the button as I pull in and pull forward until I see a tape line I have on the floor indicating where the garage door closes. This allows all 18" at the front of the truck making it easier to get in/out around

First time needing 87A. I bought a switch before knowing what I needed. I also bought a front camera so I'm working on reading up on switching between the two.... and moving them to the HU.
