What's wrong with stock air filter set up

@Casper66 Also, if you go to AFE website, click on a drop down tab for 2015 tacoma drop in -filter and it will show both oil cotton and paper dry models

I might buy that ebay item lol. I'll race you to it!!!

i'm assuming a '15 filter is the same as a '13

 

@Casper66 -- yes I believe so. My friend has a 2011 and his stock airbox looks identical to my '16. They haven't changed the 2.7 much over the years.

 

checked afe site every which way i could even for 2015 they only listed vfor a 4.0

 

may just get a k&n i've had 1 in my scion for 180k and no problems and already have a service kit just thought to try something new

I've had k&n, but I've read so many threads from this forum and other forums not to use oil filters. I came from the diesel world and oiled filters don't filter too well.

 

i sincerely appreciate that,however, it's the same part number that i have and it's an oiled filter. unless i am seriously confused (which is highly possible) as to what everybody has been calling a dry filter to me that means a non oiled filter

 

@Casper66 - the oiled version is the blue colored filter. the dry is the white/grey looking one. The description is on the link. Weird it's the same part number, but if you order from them directly I'm sure they will send you a dry if you select it.

contacted afe it's confusing but he said click on the filter and it'll give you a option. the part number for the dry filter is

31-10123. filter ordered. wish i knew how to broadcast that on tw i'm sure others are trying to figure it out also. i guess when it comes in i'll be removing secondary filter also

sure! i'm kinda out of commision rt now recovering from an operation. hopefully if i get it by next weekend i'll be able to do it. really those 2 small mods and the lce header with flowmaster muffler are about all that make since. i put 285's on it and haven't really noticed much difference but it was sluggish anyway with the automatic. if this helps i'll have to think about the exhaust

 

Hope you heal up and get well soon. Really?? 285's? That's what I want to put on when I can afford it. The only thing that will dramatically help is putting 4.88 or 5.12 gears in both diffs.

 

honestly haven't been able to drive it much but power wise i haven't seen a huge difference. it certainly rides better. if i'm not happy i can always downsize to 265's. purchased wheels and tires off craigs list for a great price. it may be that the automatic is making up the difference

In all seriousness you actually loose MPG and power. The computer fights in closed loop and maintains the air fuel ratio. Meaning adding more fuel. A lean running engine runs hot and actually produces more power. Now going back to the CAI or RAM air intakes you also run into another problem with washable element filters. They simply do not filter fine dust compared to the OEM filter and box. If you sample your oil for analysis you will see elevated silicon AKA dust/dirt compared to the oil running the factor OEM style filter and box.

My old 01 Ram 2500 5.9 diesel was a 500 wheel hp truck that used the factory air-box although slightly modified. The factory panel air filter worked great at near 1100 CFM of air flow.

Point is you will never run the 2.7 or 4.0 to those levels of airflow requirements even with forced induction.
