So Far....

I just recently started driving about 3 years ago, I joined the Army when I was still young and always took the bus everywhere. So my opinion might not matter as much as a lot of you gentleman's opinion. Even though I am now on my late 30's and was licensed on various military vehicles it is a whole different beast than civilian driving.

I am now a weekend warrior and have a long distance (220 mi) to travel to drill (national guard training weekend). I had a hoptie or as the guys in my unit used to call it a cholomobile. Getting a truck instead of a car made more sense but not a huge truck like I was overcompensating for something and the Taco was great.

The good:
I made it the first year to my destination with half a tank of gas for a truck was very impressive since my old car an 1988 oldsmobile didn't do that. The rear camera was just as good there are many children where I live so it is great to see anything behind me. It has plenty of space in the bed. And all the gizmos that are on the panel like the touch screen is really nice. So far I'm around 27500 mi and no problems at all.

The bad:
I'm not a tall or short 5'10 but I cannot find a comfortable way to sit on if I get to close it seem my legs keep hitting the steering wheel when I break or move my feet. Or if move far my arms are stretched out that after 100 miles they feel like my arms are getting muscle fatigue. This Taco is an access cab but as many of you know it was made for little children or munchkins even though my family is Mexican we aren't that short. The turning, holy donuts!! It is terrible the thing is I don't like over doing it since I got told that is very bad to force the steering wheel while turning.

Other than that I love this truck and hopefully I can learn from this forum and other people to keep my baby running till I eventually kick the bucket. This is just the opinion of someone is not a knowledgeable mechanic or an experienced driver.

 

Im 5'8" and also feel like you, cant find that happy medium between leg room and arm length, but still luv driving her.

 

I think if the seat was able to go up and down would make a world of difference .

 

Welcome! You'll have no trouble keeping her running till you kick it, Tacomas last forever and on top of that, you got one with arguably Toyota's most reliable motor (the 2.7l). It might not go anywhere quick but it's damn bulletproof.

 

That sure makes me happier that I got the 4 cyl

 

See the seat lift link in my signature for how to raise the seat. It isn't adjustable, but I like the driving position better. I wouldn't go past 1.5" as it only adjusts the rear so the seat base slope is also affected.

Yeah they've been using that motor since the mid-90's, longer than any of the others. The highest mileage Tacomas I've seen (300,000+ miles) have almost all had the 2.7l motor in them.

 

I had an '81 with a 22R, I think it had throttle-body fuel injection. This engine definitely has roots that go way back.

 

I am around 5'10" I keep my seat about 2 clicks from all the way back and adjust my arms with the back rest to where it is comfortable.

As far as turning....go drive a Frontier and report back. Tacomas turn on a dime compared to most trucks.

 

I'm 5'10" 270ish and my truck is the most comfortable thing I've ever operated.

Seat all the way back, steering wheel all the way up. I kind of lean back a little and cock my left leg up to where my knee is up by the middle of the panel. Right hand in the spot directly to the right of the air bag. Lumbar support turned all the way down.

Dang, @OP and @stmpjmpr I'm 6' even and have always wished the steering wheel had just a few more inches of telescope for me! I tend to end up with 1 hand at the bottom of the wheel for driving.

 

Have you tried adjusting the steering wheel? I believe it tilts and telescopes.

I had to drive even further this week the best thing is probably hand on the bottom of the steering wheel.

 

It really is. Unless you don't mind your legs/knees always been uncomfortable?

Also note: hand at the bottom of the wheel is fairly unsafe.

 

I got long legs and yes my feet and knees end up hurting after a long drive. I usually stop at a rest stop to move my joints. The bottom of the steering wheel is only when the road is pretty much empty for example the 5 North around central Cali
