2016 shell pics?

Sweet. How much was the topper minus the bedrug?

 

1550 plus tax that includes $75 install. 100r + free front sliding/ removable glass+ headliner, that was my only options.

 

Just had mine installed this morning. Pretty pumped about how it looks and also to start putting it to use!

 

So I had whined earlier about my ARE Z Series rear window not preventing my tailgate from opening. I finally looked closer, and decided to see if I could adjust the striker loops attached to the shell. Sure enough, there is just enough clearance in the holes that I could force the loops forward and retightened the mounting bolts, and it's pretty secure now. Just a mm or so made a big difference. Can't really blame ARE, just another example that installation is important, as everyone says. I also tidied up the wiring loom for the 3rd brake light and interior light - again. It was pretty sloppy as installed. I would still suggest that people look closely at the hinge design on this shell - unlike Leer and Snugtop models with the unframed rear windows, this one has the hinges below the top of the rear opening, so the intrude significantly on the already-limited opening access. I also removed the interior light, and will relocate it, as it also sticks down and unlike the hinges, it's fragile enough that it was only a matter of time before it got broken. Or broke my head when I reached in.

 

Generic shell question: my new ARE has the fold down front window. I guess it's for cleaning. None of my past shells have had this and I never wished I had it. And before you say anything, I keep a fairly clean rig. Is it worth it if/when I buy a new shell, or would I regret it if I don't get one? Now windoors, which I've never had - those I want.

 

Me too. Then I remind myself: less money, less weight, shorter WB, and less junk to pack. Assuming a DCSB to DCLB comparison. DCSB to AC? ... well, at least your friends or kids will be happier in the back seat.

 

I ordered a Leer 100XR for my SR5. Nice topper, but not a great match depending on the light conditions for the Barcelona Red.

 

I think it looks great. When I get around to picking up my shell/canopy/topper whatever you want to call it, I think I a going ot go matte black, or charcoal to contrast with my blue truck. THink it will look good.

 

I really liked the fold down window. I would not have been able to keep those back windows clean otherwise

 

Interesting post about back window. Didn't even think about that when I bought the shell. Naturally now I'm trying to think of ways to clean it since I don't have the drop down. Does any one have any tricks to cleaning it out or ways to clean up in between cab and shell?!

 

I made that mistake when I bought the shell for my 2007. Ended up having the dealer order a folder and installing it. $300 learning curve.

 

Did anyone see how they disabled the 3rd brake light on the cab during install? Can it be done without dropping the headliner on a double cab 2016?

 

No need to disable it.

 

I think you just have to unscrew the exterior lens and unplug it... As in this video (starting about 1:30):

Thanks for that. The challenge is that with the '16, it's an LED that doesn't have any screws on the outside. Just wondering if there's a way to disconnect it without dropping the headliner, like pulling a fuse or something. I'd like to make it as easy as possible to restore function if I need to pop the cap off for something from time to time.

Not sure what that means, but I see from your 5 posts that you have a double cab with a cap on it. Did you disable your cab light or does it come on when you hit the brakes/ cargo light?

Haha. My bad. Getting my new truck in the next couple of days, and have a Snugtop at the shop ready to go. I'm just wasting too much time making sure everything is perfect. Should be an exciting week.

 

Interesting. My '16 has screws on the outside of the 3rd brake light lens. Must be a different design on the DCSB...
