My only grip with the six speed MT is that the downshift from 5th to 4th is vague and about half the time I end up in second instead of fourth.

 

I appreciate it but I did end up going ahead and buying the AT.

FWIW I'm perfectly happy with it. Maybe I have more experience with modern powertrains than some of the guys complaining, but nearly any automatic these days is going to do its best to get to top gear as quickly as possible for fuel economy and emission reasons. Knowing that, and having experience with the same thing in other cars, I really don't find the transmission in the pickup doing anything I didn't expect it to do.

The manual is still absolutely bad-ass, but I know in the long run with my commute that I made the right choice for me.

 

How many of you had to order a manual from the factory. I'm in Ohio and manuals are like freakin unicorns. Have a TRD sport access cab in BBP being built Thursday if the don't move back the date again. Seems like I've been waiting forever. hope it's worth it. I'm trading My 2011 4cly 4x4 manual for the 6cyl sport.I have no complaints on the old truck. 100k on the original clutch and brakes.

 

Seems like a lot of guys on here had to order their manuals, and in some cases had to wait awhile (depending on what else you what the truck to be equipped with). Granted your options are limited with the 6sp MT. If you are able to wait it out, I say place an order...you can always keep an eye out for one that may pop up locally while you're waiting.

 

I had to order it and waited 8 weeks. Kept my 2012 SR5 5 speed in the family, the wife bought it.

 

Can I get some reviews from guys with a 16 DCSB OR M/T? Any complaints or things to know about when mine finally shows up. Everything I've been reading seems good but I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything

 

Just grease U joints, tighten rear axle ubolts, then drive the shit out of it.

 

I had to order mine. It was the best decision I made. I ordered mine at the end of February and it arrived last Tuesday.

So far so good. I posted a little issue with mine yesterday in this thread. I had to get my u-joints greased and the transmission topped off (it was ½ quart low on fluid).

As for suggestions, if you're accustomed to a traditional 5-speed the left and up throw to reverse takes a bit of practice to retrain muscle memory.

I haven't had any issues with the throw distance, then again the last two manuals I have driven were weird. (1970 IH fire truck with four on the floor and a 1964 IH pickup fire truck with three on the tree) That seems to be a preference thing and I am not picky.

 

It was sitting on the lot and said " Hello Sailor" looking all pretty so I bought it.

EDIT: I (we, the Bride and I) have been looking at the possibility of a pick-up for about 18 mo. Any brand/size was on the table. Going to be used to take us and the occasional grand kid(s) with us to the woods and water.

Really liked the Canyon and almost got one last summer but kinda wanted to see how the whole rumored diesel played out because I have a 60 mi. per day commute and fuel economy played a role. (Ya, I know I got the worst possible powertrain combo for economy) I was driving a '12 Golf TDI 6sp/MT averaging 45MPG and TOTALLY loved the car.

Summer came and went and having looked at sooooo many TV/TT combos that I didn't think it was going to happen. VW fiasco was announced shortly there after and by accident I stumbled across a GREAT deal on a '16 GTI DSG. Great car and soooo fun to drive.

Spring is here and talk of woods and water re-surfaced so I started looking at PUs again. Canyon diesels are like a unicorn and VERY pricey so no go there.

Was lot shopping last Sunday and saw this MT Tacoma sitting on the lot and thought IF I where to get a PU a MT would at least make it some what entertaining to drive.

Make a decent enough deal on Wednesday this week and been driving it since.

Thoughts so far: The shifter is like the one in my Ready Mix truck (Eaton/Fuller 8 speed with deep reduction) and the drivers seat leaves a lot to be desired.

Huh? I thought that was an AT issue!! Toyota must really be trying to save oil. Some Mfg Engr probably got a bonus for that cost savings idea. Let's see, maybe $2 per truck saved, 100K+ units a year, not bad. That more than pays for the $0.50 GoPro mount.

It's awful, erratic shifting, won't stay in gear in cruise control, keeps going into 6th gear around town.

Oh wait no I just had too much coffee today.

 

I have seen a few others with MT's say the same. It wasn't empty but then again it wasn't all the way topped off. It was likely filled to a point that the engineers felt it was safe from damage and economical

 

What would be some symptoms that having low fluid would cause?

Of course the worst case scenario is that the transmission refuses to budge when you depress the clutch and attempt to move the stick shifter.

Indicators of very low transmission fluid are:
Smell burning since the fluid is also a coolant as well as a lubricant. The fluid will literally burn from over heating.
Weird noises from the transmission when it is in neutral
Randomly pop out of gear or aka gear slip
A dragging clutch - A dragging clutch is one that fails to disengage the clutch disk from the flywheel when the clutch is pressed
Grinding or shaking when shifting or driving

Checking the fluid is pretty straight forward in a manual transmission. That said, if you have a new Tacoma just call up your dealer and see if you can drop by and get it checked quickly. It takes no longer than a 5 minutes to check. I personally, do not like jerking around under the a vehicle with a torque wrench to make sure the cap is on at the right tension.

 

The off-road has hydro assist braking which may make you think you used abs but really it does not. It will feel like the brake is buzzing, And all UPS trucks have this it does the exact same thing. Nothing to be afraid of.

The manual in this truck is very easy. You really do not have to force any gears in. I have heard of it not coming out of gear, but not sure if it a user or truck issue.

The cleaning cycle is a loud clacking sound when ever you stop at a light for a couple of sec in neutral/idle.

I have put over 1500 miles on the truck and no issues at all. Take care of the truck and it will take care of you.

Goddamned Toyota! I just got home last week from a 1400km round trip to Quesnel, BC and my manual transmission was sticking gears 1-6 the whole way home. I had my 8000km service on Thursday and told them and they said they couldn't find anything wrong...

Isn't that the service Tech's job to troubleshoot and discover problems before they become damaging issues? I even told them to check the transmission fluid level and they said "oh no, that's only a problem on the auto, you have a manual"

Yeah I also have a $50,000 truck that I want you to make sure wasn't deficient from the factory you asshat.

They also wouldn't turn off my seatbelt chime when it's clearly written in the manual as an optional electronic modification the dealership will perform at your request.

"Sorry that's not how we interpret that"

Then phone Toyota, because that's how English works
