I'm having bit of cold feet...
I did order the 16' TRD DCSB OR 4x4 few days ago with deposit but the more I read about tranny issues, etune radio issues, U joint vibration and Diff fluid issues makes me feel very skeedish to buy the Tacoma. I have owned several Toyotas with out a single issue but this would be my first truck and I don't intend to buy $40k truck with problems. I did a short test drive on a Trd sport and it was a nice drive but the tranny did shift slow and over shifted once. I can ask the dealership to check all the fluid before delivery but I'm not sure if they will since it will cost them time and money to check. I'm still very excited to get the Tacoma but my intuition is saying just wait until Toyota resolves this issue. I don't know what to do....

Any forum like this is the same, lots of issues come up and it starts looking like they are lemons, its great that the info gets out there though so you know what to look for, we have a 2013 4runner and someone posted on a forum about rusty tail gates, I go outside and sure enough I have a pin prick of rust that I doubt I would have seen without the heads up, got the tailgate painted under warranty.

I would tell them to check the levels, tell them as soon as you get home you will double check and if any are low you will be upset

That cold feet comes with any new car. Go to any car forum and you will hear similar stories. No vehicle is immune to issues. If you like the truck buy it ($40k seems high).

It doesn't hurt to ask them to check the fluids.

Tell them you refuse to sign the papers until the fluid level is checked. I would tell them to make sure your U joints are greased as well

This. You have a lot of leverage until you sign to make them check all that shit you may be concerned about.

Don't worry man. The problems you read about with trucks here are a tiny percentage of trucks sold. While there is a chance you'll get a problemed truck, there's a much greater chance you'll get a flawless one. And every new vehicle has quirks that, at first, may seem strange but will quickly become unnoticeable.

Enjoy you're new truck. The wait would kill me.

I was in the same boat as you..I ordered mine in Dec and then started reading about the crappy seats, transmission,no power, hood falling off etc...was almost ready to cancel it but I didn't. The transmission takes a little bit getting used to but after a few weeks you will be fine. If you just mash the pedal then it will shift like a mofo. Once you get used to where it shifts you can control it with the pedal.

You have to remember how broad of a spectrum this forum is. You aren't going to hear about all the people who have no problems and love their vehicle. Why would they feel the need to post that they do? I had the same fears and so far have had zero problems and love my truck. Just my 2 cents

Wait for the 2017 if you can. Hopefully most of the problems of the 2016 will be worked out by then.

No offense but is this your first time on a vehicle forum? Bottom line it's a Toyota and a Tacoma, but any make and model will have some issues and you will hear about them on the forums.

Do you need to know, or care?
Don't worry. Had mine since November, had the low tranny fluid, but that's all fixed up now. Love the truck and smiling every day I'm behind the wheel. Lots of power, if you are willing to be hard on the pedal, baby it and it feels like a dog but you get better gas mileage. Just takes time to get use to. Had a Gen 2, but love this one so much better.

Forget the forum for a sec & ask yourself what truck do you need/want to buy? If the answer is the truck you ordered, sit back & save money for all your mods.
As many have said here, every single thing built by humans has a possibility of failure. Once that is accepted & you've done your due diligence, just ask the dealer what you are concerned with as part PDI. Also test drive your truck in the conditions you will drive before signing on any dotted line.

With all the issues that have come up I'd still rather have the Tacoma then any other small pickup available. Most of the issues can be solved at home in a day. I also don't experience half of the things brought up. So while this forum has caused certain paranoia in me about the truck it's also a wealth of information to how to fix any little thing that may come up.

One sales device is to sit you down and ask you what you don't like about your X, that you currently own. Then they ask you what don't you like about Y, which you don't own (which they are trying to sell you). You will be able to list a lot more things you don't like about something you do own, than something you don't own.

The same effect happens here. People here are able create a laundry list of things they don't like about the Tacoma. If there were real congenital issues with the Tacoma I don't think the sales would be as strong as they are. Relax.

Even if you order it, you still don't HAVE to buy it if you test drive it and find an issue. Are there some unacceptable issues? Yes. I wouldn't be worried about low fluids or grease levels, those are easy to diagnose and fix, even yourself.

I would be more concerned about the vibration issues and other problems that have no (and may never have) solution yet. But you do have this forum and see the major issues. So set your emotions aside when you see your truck and test drive it. Look for all of the issues. Then you can make your decision.

Had mine since 1/15/16, built in Baja 12/15. No ISSUES! Perfect. Doing 65 to 70mph, in a 35+mph crosswind coming from passenger side I get a little howl (flat french horn?) that only adds to the charm, color and personality of the truck (grin). ODO yesterday when I filled up: 9,079 miles and avg. 22.7mpg. Fix for howl can be found in forums here and involves duck tape over 4 a-frame holes.

I think most folks are just surprised that there are a few more issues than the dash rattle and tranny shifter popping out of the 1st gen, exploding rear diff of the 2005 and wheel bearing wear of the 2nd gen. I am sure most of the 2016s are fine but I personally would wait for 2017.

That's any 6 speed auto I've driven, unless of course it's a dual clutch system like the VAG cars. My 2014 Santa Fe was the same. It constantly gear searched from 5-6 on the highway, especially when it was loaded up. It was a nightmare in the city. I did get 'used' to it but I will always choose a manual over an auto. Manuals are just too damn easy to drive to give that control over.

Besides my wife's Xterra Pro 4X will have an automatic, yes we looked for a manual but because they won't be making them after 2015 we couldn't find a manual anywhere.

If you like the truck and you know how to drive a manual, get a manual. You won't like the engine/transmission 'issues' people speak of. It's not only on forums btw, it's people I've spoken to as well who say the same thing.

Toyota fucked up with the programming and that's all there is too it. I would rather get 2-3 MPG less and be driving a truck I enjoy driving and not one with transmission...Gremlins.
