I'm selling my bored out TRX250 EX. Some lady called me and says she wants to buy it for her 11 yo son. She wanted to "try" it out even though she never really rode before. My wife and I were talking and we are kind of wary about selling this to her. We're not sure if an 11 y/o is big enough for this quad. I don't want to sell this to somebody that has no business on it. We don't have kids, so I'm not sure what size quads "usually" go with what ages. Let me know what you think.

wow seems like a bit of over kill for some kid that age, well unless he's like my nephew hows 9 years old, 5', and weight like 140lbs (what the hell are they feeding kids these days so they get so big?)

    I remember when I was 11, I rode a 250, but I wasn't your average 11 yr. old. (5'4, 150)

My thing is who's gonna teach this kid to ride? I have adults get off and are "wowwed" by the power.

Moral dilemma? An 11yo on a 229cc sport ATV? I'd say so.

I used to teach the ATV Riders Safety Course and we would have people show up with their kids on quads that the kid was very obviously not ready for or big enough to handle. General rule is 6 and older to 70cc, 12 and older to 90cc and 12 and older 90cc and up

This strikes close to home as I lost a good friend in an ATV accident. He was riding a quad that was more than he could handle (and inexperienced) and ended up rolling it off a cliff.

If it were me I would not sell it to the lady.

Sorry for your loss. I'm texting her right now explaining everything. It's good to hear some info from an instructor. You confirmed what I was thinking.

Depends, how bad do you need the money?...

I probably would be cautious about selling it to her. Seems to big for a lad of that age.

honestly, i wouldnt sell it to her. if i were to sell my motorcycle to some kid that i knew had no business on it.... id feel like shit if i heard he died because he wrecked it or something. id much rather take the few thousand $ loss and know that i didnt give this kid something that could kill him

The manufacturer suggests this size quad for 16yrs and older. Some states have laws against kids riding 'oversized' quads for their ages.

Now I have some friends that have pre-teen and teenager kids who have been riding for years and started out on the little 70-90's and moved up from there, but the biggest factor is experience and someone to supervise and teach them. They now ride 110's or 250's without a problem, but that is with a lot of experience and parents who ride with them all the time. So, my opinion I wouldn't sell to this family.

I forgot you are in Vegas....join Dumontduneriders.com and post it for sale on there, might help you move it quicker.

The kid will hurt himself on any size quad if he is an idiot or simply not "dirtbike/atv inclined" I had a cr250( 2 stroke) at 13 years old with no issues. I had a friend the same age with a cr80 and he wadded himself up all the time. Its a risk that goes with the sport and in my opinion makes it fun.

Let me get off my tiny soapbox now. I would explain to the woman your concerns about his age vs. the quad size and take it from there.

I think you are making the right choice by explaining your concerns to her. Best of luck with her understanding where you are going and with the sale!!!

    UPDATE:

I sent her a lengthy text explaining everything. I told her what size is recommended by mfg's and ATV Rider Safety Course. I also told her that the Raptor 350 she was interested in was not a good idea as well. Her reply was:

"I don't let my childrens toys babysit them, but thanks for your concern."

Now does this sound like a biatch? Or am I taking it the wrong way?

I sold my GSXR 1000 to an idiot squid. We needed the money. And my wife actually sat down with the guy and talked to him about respecting the machine. Everytime I hear of an accident in his part of town I always wonder......

    getting there....
do what you think is right man. when i was selling my boat, some folks from the Philipines came and looked at it....because their dad liked to fish(it was a small 15 ft bass boat/70 hp motor)...and they had never even been on a boat before.....i couldnt sell to them and take a chance on them killing themselves or someone else or getting hurt...or even stranded. they even wanted me to take them out and give them lessons. wasnt gonna happen.
