Bought it March 7... has had one warranty oil change.....yesterday going down our freeway around town between 45-50mph I get an engine knocking...1100 rpm range ...fairly loud. Loses power and have to accelerate out of it. 9274 miles mostly highway. Acts and sounds like it has a fouled plug but it does not idle rough or start rough. Noticed gas mileage has dropped a bit too. Taking it in first thing tomorrow am. Disappointed.. Uggh

I dont care what the 3rd gen guys say, there's a new thread with not just a minor problem on these new trucks every day, kind of frightening and was not common at all with the 2nd gens, Im rooting for these guys and the 3rd gen, I want to always be in a Tacoma, but this new truck makes me question my next purchase. Good luck OP and report back what you find.

Description, RPM and MPH line up for the idea of a lugged motor knock.

Any chance this is a manual transmission truck?

Don't worry. Some douche will come along and say something lame about people with 3rd Gen's overreacting and blowing things out of proportion, but yeah, seems like relevant problems (not people bitching and moaning about stuff like the seat being uncomfortable, poor gas mileage when putting on bigger tires, etc, but actual real problems) are popping up more and more and Toyota just seems to ignore it and keep selling them.

Check your oil, hope that's your problem, but if it burning oil, hope it's not a cylinder
Problem....since it's still under toyota total care, get her in fast

Went in to the dealership yesterday. No check engine light every came on. Toyota dealer did the last oil change about 3 weeks ago per the warranty so I dearly hope the tech knew enough to put the right amount of oil in it. I did not double check their work as you can understand. Yes, I drive about 220-250 miles per day. When I dropped it off I pointed out to the service guy the black exhaust sediment just on the inside of the tail pipe exhaust along with the rest of what I have reported here. It is an automatic tranny. Will let ya know when I find anything out.

Damn, you must have a pretty good job to have to make that commute every day...especially driving.

I can't imagine putting that many miles on a new car...i would of gotten an older corolla or prius..something with better mpg and have the truck on the side. :D

Sorry about your luck so far op, hope you get it sorted out.

Nope. Sorry. Don't understand that at all.

Trust and dealer service don't go together.

Always remember those basic services are done by the lowest paid tech's they have. The % of entry level people in any profession who strive for quality with a desire to prove their worth is pretty low. Unfortunately, this one is no different.

Direct injection engines sometimes will blow black smoke. It's normal
