A little backstory. Three weeks ago I was rear ended. No one was hurt but the truck has some pretty good damage. I have a bedcover on it and it was damaged. After talking to both insurances involved, I was told that because the cover is not factory installed, it will not be replaced or repaired. Is this completely bs or am I stuck with a damaged bedcover?

Did you purchase the truck with the cover already on?

I did not. I bought the cover three years ago.

Sounds as if it's the other drivers fault, correct? If so, I don't understand why your property wouldn't be covered regardless of what coverage you had on your truck assuming you had everything legal...

Yes, it is the other drivers fault and their insurance has already agreed to repair my truck and replace my daughters car seat. The police recommended I have that replaced. But they told me that the bedcover is not covered due to being an aftermarket accessory. My insurance agent said his hands are tied unless I pay my deductible which is more than what a new cover would cost.

I love that one. "My hands are tied." I'd be arguing with them over that. When you get into an accident and you're not at fault, it is your insurance's liability to repair everything to the way it was before the accident. There's a reason they're one of the richest organizations in the world; they try and weasel out of everything. So that means if you had aftermarket tail lights put in and they got smashed up, they wouldn't install OEM ones because it wasn't stock?

Bull bar, but more to come
yeah you might be outta luck OP. I have personal property insurance covering any aftermarket parts on my truck/ Super cheap too around 12 bucks a month on top of auto, and usually they discount if you bundle. Covers everything stored outside the house. Just have to document what you want covered, so insurance can give you a check if it gets stolen, broken, etc. Hope everything works out for you.

I actually brought that up as an argument but was told her car seat is a requirement by law and that was why it was covered. I really hate dealing with insurance companies.

I'll definitely be looking into personal property insurance in the future.

Isn't that the truth. Bunch of con artists. There's a reason they're literally wealthier than banks.

Not at this point. It's possible there could be some frame damage. The bed is setting crooked. They won't know until the bed is removed.

Make sure you hit them for loss of value due to the accident. I don't recall the exact term but because of the accident, it'll show up on car fax and there would most likely be a deduction for that.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Aftermarket parts are usually depreciated, and you have to have a receipt for them to work from.

Press the issue by providing the receipt. You won't get a new cover most likely, but assuming an 'expected life' of over 3 years, you should get something towards a new one. Proof of warranty on the cover will help with the 'expected life'. Like if it has a 10 year warranty, you'd be looking for 2/3 the cost..........

when I told my ins. company that I bought a new Taco, they said to make sure I call them with the value of the topper when I get it, so it can be added to the vehicle insured value. If you didn't do that, you might be SOL.
