Davis is right though... I think it was about this time last year that I bought two complete baofeng setups.

I use a magnetic mount Tram antenna. Cable is routed through the back slider (you can completely close the slider). I also use a power adapter that takes the place of the battery, and a mike that plugs in to the radio.

I got two setups because one wouldn't do me much good if I was the only one using it and I was trying to get our Colorado crew to jump on the bandwagon.

The setup seems to work well. I'll know better once I get my license and start really using it, but when I had a longer commute I could hear repeater traffic just fine and if I keyed the mike I could hear the repeater broadcast that too so I knew I was getting out to the repeater as well.

I've also used it several times on the trail when the one guy shows up with just a family band walkie talkie as the Baofengs can be used on those frequencies too.
The entire thing can be set up in 10 minutes and removed in 5 with no permanent alterations to your truck.

Anyway the radio challenge was an awesome gesture by @Lars . It made me finally get off my butt and get licensed (that was more about beating @chenbro though :D) Hopefully some other people get going with HAM. If Davis wants to run an HT, he can have the radio or if anyone else is interested, I'm happy to loan out my second setup to see if it will work for you.

Actual quote from @teamhypoxia at the testing site: "I'm just here to see Davis [sic] fail" :D

We both attempted (and failed) the general level test so I guess he left happy anyway

Also, if anyone's on the fence about the test... the sum total of my preparation consisted of taking a few online practice exams about a year ago, and taking about 5 more last night.
I passed 3 of the 5 I took last night and just went over the questions I missed. It's really not hard if you just familiarize yourself with the stuff ahead of time.

I think I missed 9 too many on the general. I was just guessing on at least 75% of it.

I missed 9 as well. I need to study and try again to get a cess to those other frequencies

What is the advantage of those frequencies over VHF/UHF?

We have mostly uhf and vhf. The Hf is what come with the next license and it's the frequencies used to bounce signal off the atmosphere or moon. Apparently lots of traffic but I've not monitored it locally to confirm

    Yes.
For the record, when I took my extra test, I put a mark next to the 4 questions I was pretty sure I got wrong. Expecting to get the other 46 correct.

I got all four of the ones I thought I'd get wrong, correct. And missed 4 others. (FacePalm) :)
