I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
2gen trucks had problems but nowhere near what turd gen has.
If you search 2gen forum for engine failure you maybe lucky to find 3 in 10 years of forum, if you search turd gen forum there are atlast known 3 in past couple months. And none of the 2gen engine failures are with low mileage either.
Transmission failures, I don't think anybody had to swap to new transmission in 2gen and there are some trucks with over half a million miles on them. on the other hand it looks like turd gen gets new (or refub one) soon after delivery. (aka 1300 miles) thats just idiotic.

Please keep that gem of a 2nd gen as long as you possibly can!

This 2016 is my first Tacoma, no concerns thus far. I haven't had much seat time in a second gen so I really can't comment on how good that machine was. I bought the third gen based on the respect that the Tacoma is known for. It took 10 years of work to make the second gen what it is, I'm sure the 2005 had a lot more issues than the 2016 as the 3rd gen is pretty similar in design. As for some of the concerns 6 speed transmission shifting in todays fuel miser builds, try a 9 speed automatic and you'll see erratic. All in all the third gen is a first year build with big boots to fill, owners have to adjust to fuel saving tactics and probably some tsb's and recalls. I have no regrets with my 16 Tacoma, it's initial quality been better than my previous 13 F150 and leap years ahead of the 15 GMC Sierra company truck I drive.

I'm sure my post here does not mean squat but I was in the market for another vehicle early 2015. Wanted another Tacoma but was bored with the 2nd gen styling so I ended up getting a 2015 4Runner. Then the dealer gets the new 3rd gens and I knew right there I had to have one no test drive needed. I did drive one later though a couple times. Mind you I am a new car kind of guy, usually every couple of years I tend to trade. I looked them over inside and out and absolutely loved it. Of course didnt want to buy a new vehicle mid-winter and dealer tells me I would get same $ on trade now as later. Fast forward to March and here I am in a new Tacoma and do not regret it.
Anyway different strokes. In the long run OP will need to drive one if so inclined and decide for himself. Good luck with your decision SmallMouth. Nothing wrong with the 2015

I bought a 15 last September and think it may be best thing I ever did...vehicle wise. Keep 15 IMO.

I initially looked for a 2015, however the price was exactly the same as the 2016. I found this to be crazy so went with the 2016. If they would have knocked off 5k on the 2015 I would have been all over that.

Man, those 2nd gen reg cab trucks are sweet! I still love my 96 reg cab but hell, in a couple years it will be rust in the wind. Got my eyes peeled for one just like that.

Yeah, was a fun truck. Added cruise to it, that was fun. The wheels were not really what I was looking for but local tire shop had them. Some guy bought them for a Tundra, mounted tires and installed them and oh crap, wheels won't turn. Larger brakes, scraped inside of wheels so I got a good deal on them.

When was that? Last September as each day passes there were fewer and fewer 2015's in state of WI. But I still got mine for $4k under MSRP.

Well, they'll be hearing plenty from me since mine's warrantied to 100k.

Exactly. Cocky bastards aren't they? At least they've gone that long without issues. My transmission started giving me problems just after 4,000 miles. We'll see if all the fanboys still stick with their '16's once they're out of warranty and they have to start shelling out their own money to fix the issues they're having. It's easy to say things like, "Shaking out the bugs", "These things happen with a new truck" when you don't have to pay for it because it's under warranty. While others scoffed at me getting the extended warranty (paid soemthing like $1,200 for it with window tint and clear bra included in the price) I'm happy I did given the crappy transmission and unwillingness of Toyota to acknowledge it's an issue.

Rolling the truck and getting a broken windshield is a problem with the truck?
Next you will cite some dude running out of gas as a major defect. Look a little harder and you could find way more relevant posts to trash the 2016.

In all fairness you cannot blame the truck for getting a cracked windshield or rolling the truck. Seriously, you're really reaching with those, and I'm someone who thinks my '16 is a P.O.S., but you gotta be fair.

I can do both. No sense in trading the truck in now when I can basically get the same for it in 2-3 years, and by then it will be close to being paid off. So what's your point?
