I do mostly regular non offroad driving. I occasionally tow a trailer and visit my father in the mtns but no serious terrain. I am wondering if I would be better with a sport model with the lsd or an offroard pkg with the locker. I am leaning towards the locker if I can't find a dc 4wd for the right price. Any advice?

I opted for the TRD Sport. If I do leave pavement it is on a gravel road or dirt road no mud or rock climbing for me, truck cost to much to beat on it. I do tow a trailer with motorcycles a lot, 7k +/- a miles a year. Plus the 2wd truck gets a little better everyday fuel mileage which is good for commuting to work. Up keep on the 4wd truck is more as well.

I opted for the 2WD OR model- I really don't go off road much but it's nice to have a truck that is relatively capable even without 4 wheel drive.

If you're not going off road then choose the LSd (I did), unlike the locker it is active all the time. You can't drive around town with the locker activated so you'll do most of your driving with an open diff. I live in the mountains and haul stuff and my LSD never disappoints.

Are you talking about a new tacoma?

All the new trucks have the AUTO LSD. So - there is no real difference with the Sport versus the Offroad - they both have the AUTO LSD.

So - if you're talking about getting a new truck, get the TRD Offroad because you'll have the locker if you need it.

If you're talking about used TAcomas..... The 05-08 Sport has the mechanical LSD and other non-TRD trucks have the mechanical LSD also.
I have the mechanical LSD on my 07 and it's perfect for snowy on-road driving and it's always working.

I am looking for an 05-08 more than likely a prerunner. So does the TRD offroad not have a LSD? Sorry I am very new to the truck world and have a ton of questions.

^^No, it has a locker. The TRD Sport (PreRunner or 4x4) and some non-TRD PreRunners have LSD.

    As Asgard said.....

The mechanical LSD was an option in the 05-08 non TRD trucks & it came in all TRD Sport models.

If you casually offroad - then I'd recommend looking for the mechanical LSD. Having that is much better in terms of 'traction' than not having it at all.

ok, so I have my NOMEX suit on for this one.

I was trying to make the same decision when I bought my 09 Prerunner in July. Saleman told me both Sport & OR have LSD. I cared more about LSD than the locker, so I went in looking for a Sport. They had an OR on the lot that they were making a sweet deal on... I figured the same thing if they both have LSD might as well get the locker.

Then someone told me here on TW that my 09 Prerunner OR didn't have a real LSD, just an electric locker & if I wanted a LSD I shouldve gone for the Sport.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
No need for the suit, it's a good question. What Janster meant by Auto LSD is it is not mechanical like the previous years. The LSD is actually the brakes being applied to different wheels by the trucks computer. The slipping wheel's brakes are applied which will transfer the power to the wheel with traction.

All '09+ TRDs have the auto LSD but the Off Road adds a locker. I'm not sure of the advantages or disadvantages of the auto LSD but if I were buying an 09 I would choose the Off Road also.

Seems that a lot of people have had issues with their locker. I personally don't need anything else to break in the future plus I don't need it.

I installed an aftermarket Detroit TRUETRAC. An LSD. Love the thing.

Thanks for the clarification, '98. I'll have to re-read my owners manual again...seems like this is something that ought to be spelled out there.
