I totally get this; anyone can look inside the car and see the empty (hopefully) holster when you aren't there. That screams BREAK INTO THIS CAR. I'll have to check into something under the steering column. It still may be very visible, but may be a better option.

Last resort would be a cross draw holster clipped onto the seat belt while I'm in the driver seat.

This says more about you and your mindset than it does of those who choose to carry.

I am left handed, but nearly everything I learned growing up used right handed equipment. Golf, rifles, etc. When I started shooting handguns, I started shooting right handed. However, EACH time I am at the range, I shoot at least 100 rounds with my left hand. I practice a lot with single handed grips in odd positions if I can. If you are inside your vehicle, you have all sorts of stuff that comes into play if you need to discharge a firearm. You had better damn well be good with either hand. Location of the firearm is important, but a lot of other stuff comes into play after you grab it.

Whatever I am carrying is usually loose in my center console. I have three vehicles and mounting a holster isn't practical.

So you feel the need to protect your family and yourself at home, but not out in public? If nobody carried a gun you say? Well they do and that has nothing to do with concealed carry laws. Guess what the guy wanting to rob you or rape your wife at gun point doesn't t care about any gun laws. You sir are mindless!

First, thanks sdsmtengineer. Great post with really detailed pictures. I also would not want my weapon to be visibly exposed unless I wanted it out. I found this for mounting under the dash. It is called a Cojo Magnetic Gun holder and looks pretty slick. The round item is for a rifle butt when using it as a wall mount.
cojo gun magnet and rifle butt holder.jpg Here is a pic of it installed on the drivers side. cojo gun magnet underdash mount .jpg
I am going to try to place it in a more 'hidden' spot so that it is not visible when I exit the truck or if you look in the window.
Here is the website if you want to check it out. http://www.cojomfg.com/

Somehow, I highly doubt you own a gun when you spout this party line of what only you enlightened few know. It must be awesome to not only know for sure what the founding fathers actually meant, but to count yourself as one of the few people who gets to decide when and where the rest of us get to carry. And before you start crying like you have just been personally attacked for no reason, YOU interjected your UNSOLICITED gun control opinion into a how to thread. A thread that shows law abiding citizens how to legally mount their lawfully owned firearms in their vehicles.

I carry my CZ 75 compact in a IWB holster clipped onto the passenger seat rear seat pocket. I usually drive with my arm over the passenger seat naturally, so it's an easy right-hand draw for me. It's also totally concealed with tinted windows and the passenger seat reclined a little. Plus, no actual mods required to the truck!

I have the Highway Holster mount in mine. No drill install, and good option for quick access by right handers. I want a different holster than the one I currently have on it, but the nice part is that it accepts a wide variety of clip on holsters, and you can take the holster off easily, making it not so obvious to thieves that there might be a gun around.

I would implore everyone to remember that we live on a very large continent (yes, there are Canadian members here too) and that everyone's experiences form their beliefs on not just this, but many issues. I have lived from Arizona to Ohio to Alabama, and many places in between, and everywhere I have been I have felt differently about my need to carry in that location. You wouldn't catch me dead without it hunting and camping in southern New Mexico, but I didn't carry in small town Tennessee. Every city, state and rural area is different, and there is no one answer. Please remember this before you condemn those that do or those that don't.

On topic = I love my serpa, but have been considering any number of magnets and other options that are less obvious when I don't/can't carry. Check out Amazon, there are quite a few. I am worried about under the dash just because I don't want to wreck the plastics. How have others reinforced it, or have you not felt the need?

When I was a much younger man, I was driving down I-95 when a gravel truck with gravel on his rear bumper dropped some on the road while I was passing him. My windshield got starred so I followed him to a remote gravel pit where he dropped his load to ask him how to make a claim on his insurance for the damage. I waited until he finished and then began to stroll over in his direction. He approached me aggressively with fists clenched yelling that I was tailgating him and any damage was my fault. I began backpedaling and reaching behind me to find the door handle so I could get away from this loon. It was a summer day and my windows were down. I missed the drivers door and accidentally reached into the rear window. On the seat was my Remington Mod. 94 that I had just picked up from a gunsmith. As soon as he laid eyes on that gun, he stopped in his tracks, became Mr. Polite and informed me how to get ahold of his boss. Since I had never taken my eyes off him, I was a little perplexed at his sudden change of demeanor. As I turned to get in my vehicle, I spotted the rifle and had an epiphany. I now have a carry permit and use it often. Because of the scourge of drugs in Bangor, ME, a friend of mine in the State Police told me that our little outpost had become a dangerous town and that he as well as most members of his troop will not venture into town without being armed. Those who fear carry permit owners have their eye on the wrong person. It's all the criminals who don't give a rats behind what the law says that we have to be worried about. I don't ever want to use a gun to protect myself or my own, but I will if forced to. May that day never come.
As for the holster mod, I just keep mine in the door pocket. Easy peasy.

I agree, being good with either hand is a necessity. If you carry and ride a motorcycle, you either learn to shoot lefty or modify your throttle. I remember when I first started training dumb-handed shooting, the pistol would stove-pipe from having too loose of a grip, or what's called limp-wristing. An injured dominant hand can change everything when the stress is on.

I formed my beliefs when a criminal came into the club I was working in and opened fire. A bullet hit the wall six inches from my head. My friend Sean was shot in the chest and killed him instantly. That was 35 years ago and it is etched permanently in my memory.

You are right, experiences form your beliefs.

I believe if you are a bad person and prey on others in Texas, eventually you are going to run into a good guy that isn't afraid to stop you.

A bit more...I always carry on my person, but do need to get a clip for a flashlight in that location for my 3rd gen Taco. I can't put EVERYTHING in the console!

    To what OLEGOAT#1 wrote.........

Ughhhhh! It is so sad to see that there are thinking, viable human beings that truly believe that we do not need to carry weapons about, to protect ourselves and our family. Further, they even tout that the people carrying weapons (legally) are the problem. And I encounter these "I follow the Left because it's popular and trendy", people more and more every day! Life is not a trend!!!

A bad dude bent on taking what is not his doesn't care about you or your stuff. He'll take what he wants because he CAN. Especially if he is armed as well (a gun, a knife, or shortened bat, etc). Do you just GIVE him your watch, your wallet, your first born? Many of us that "carry" can give you examples of what made us come to that decision. It's not fear, my friend, it's reality! Get a clue and stop drinking the Coolaid.

Lastly, I don't want to hear about the fact that this is a thread dedicated to a mod. This guy posted this crap! Peace out.
