San Diego Vacation

I will be going to San Diego mid February 2010 and I wanted to hear what you guys suggested as to what to do. I will be there for 3 or 4 days. I know I could just google it but I want to hear more personal accounts and how something really is not how it looks in pics. Are there any cool races going on that time of year? Any awesome views/beaches that are a must in the area? Anything worthwhile across the border?

I enjoyed myself while I was there for school (Navy). I went to the Zoo, it was a sight. You have to try Roberto's, I can get the address although there are MANY of them, and get a carne asada chimichunga. The historic district in San Diego was neat too.
I was there from April until October.

 

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into those. I would also like to try In N' Out sometime when I'm out there.

Also make sure you try a California burrito and add some sour cream and guac with it. There's also Sea World and the wild animal park. If you feel like making a drive up north a little to Escondido, there's wine country. Forget the winery, but if you go on Sunday, the have garlic butter loaves with brie inside. Absolutely amazing

Hi Jason, as a San Diego native I can say that there is alot to do with activities for just about anyone's liking , just give a shout out as to what interest you & we'll accomodate you, I CAN tell you that you won't be shoveling any snow , & you might want to bring a couple light "T" shirts & shorts, sometimes its about 80 degrees in Feb......

P.S. I would advise NOT GOING TO TJ (Tijuana ,Mexico) because of the drug cartel violence going on near the border, this is not a myth its been real violent there for a couple years now !!

 

Good suggestion. I looked it up and it's only 30 or so minutes away so that's definitely an option. My parents may even like a little wine tasting.

haha. I don't have to worry about snow here either but 80 in Feb would be nice. I would like to see some nice landscapes. The desert interests me. Photography interest both me and my father alot. Thanks.

the tree's you'll see in San Diego aren't native....not very green either.

 

I mean like cool views. I've never seen the wide open desert or anything like that. Are there any cool mountains there?

 

as for the In&out secret stuff...if you ask for "animal style" on your fries or burger then you will most likely be in heaven!! its grilled onions and some secret sauce stuff, it is soo good..there's an In&out a couple blocks from my house and it never gets old!!

I would stay out of TJ too.
I mean what do you really need to go there for? underage drinking, drugs or hookers are about it I suppose. I haven't been in 15+ years lol and no reason to ever go back.
try the In-n-Out , I usually get the double-double (double cheesburger)
they have a 4x4 version.. 4 patties and good real fries.
Now if you can find a Tommy's burger, then you're in luck. Chili EVERYTHING!!! lol

I know it will be Feb time frame, so I'm not too sure how the weather will be; there are tours that you can take to go around the bay and also the maritime history museum(one of the boats was on Ghosthunters) and also the Midway if you or the parents are into US Naval history. The trip in the bay will probably be the easiest to see the carriers at North Island and over at my neck of the woods at Point Loma we have some more boats. I believe all the tours you can sign up for regarding these are on Harbor Drive across from the Holiday Inn downtown waterfront.

If you like sushi there are plenty of good restaurants too. Also check out La Jolla, they have a lot going on there.

In regards to Point Loma, there is the Cabrillo Monument. Best view of Downtown San Diego and the bay that there is. Park closes at 1700 and is strict access for employees/mil only after that time.

 

As another native San Diegan (I think there is 17 of us ) I welcome you. Regarding Mexico, stay the heck away from TJ. I do suggest walking across the border in to Tecate though, especially Sunday afternoons in the "square". Very authentic, safe and peaceful. Get your coastal topography bearings from the tops of Cabrillo National Monument and or Mt. Soledad, and Mt. Helix in La Mesa for an inland perspective. A loop drive to Julian and then east down to the desert floor, south on county highway S2 and then back up interstate 8 west (or opposite direction) is well worth the varied daytrip sights you can really only see in SoCal-San Diego.
Carne Asada buritos from just about any taco shop, and fish tacos from either Wahoos or Rubio's ( trust me they are really good ).
La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park, Gaslamp, Embarcadero-Seaport Village are almost must sees. Rent a bike and cruise the Mission Beach boardwalk to see how the bitchen beach is for the locals during off season when it's back to a neighborhood.

 

I'm very interested in naval history. I've been to the Intrepid in NYC an di loved it. Thanks for the suggestion

My dad mentions a 1/2 mile boardwalk north of san diego toward L.A. Do you know anything about that? Is it worth seeing?
