Transmission gear shifting issue, not hunting or vibration related

I only know of 3 members at TW that recieved extended warranty for the low fluid issue .
You say they checked the fluid again ? how many times have you been back ?
What symptoms were you feeling ?
Did they clear the short term adaptive memory ?
Did you open a case with Toyota Corporate before you took the truck in ?
Was your dealership familiar with the low fluid issue ?
These are a few of the questions that need to be looked at even before I would consider taking the truck into the dealership .

 

I've been having this issue as well and I'm about to turn 3k. First time I took my truck in they gave me a run around about how the tech couldn't recreate the issue. Said the scan gauge read fine and sent me on my way. Unfortunately I was stuck working nonstop for the last month due to a couple issues and haven't been able to take it in. I will be taking it in soon and having the tech go one a ride with me.

 

I did that on an 03 Ranger and it quickly runs up in cost. Even using parts from well known and respected modification shops comes with more wear and tear and cost than expected. I went full LT front and rear and while the truck rode like a cloud, it wwas havoc for the drive train. The additional wind resistance killed gas mileage and always felt like the truck was being wrung out to go anywhere and it was especially bad on freeways. That lead to extra wear and tear on the engine(ended up having the issue with exhaust valves going to shit due to how lean the engines programmed) and the transmission needing a rebuild eventually due to how much more shifting it required. The rear end eventually let go as well.

All told, that was 8k in additional maintenance costs on top of the 12k for a well done LT set up. If I were to do it over and still go LT, I would have done a V8 swap and built transmission and rear end. Would have run close to the same cost but with less down time and frustration caused by break downs. 20k for reliable mods for a modest upgrade isn't anything to scoff at.

I am currently waiting for the monthly visit by the Toyota rep that visits my local dealer to show him the slipping/lag in gear.

My worry is that he will recommend a new tranny and they will give me the same tranny and it does the same thing...

 

You have been involved with the low fluid issue for the past 5 months . Is there any chance you could get a transmission shop to test drive your truck when its cold ? We need a third party opinion from one of you guys in the worst way . Road tests are free

 

I could I guess. I just got to find the time. Also what sucks about this is the having to wait until it's cold or leaving it over night

This is for the members who had their fluid topped off by the dealer but are still feeling a delay .
It would sure be nice to get a professional third party opinion .

 

Out of curiosity, has anyone with these issues had the TCU reset after refilling? Some people said that helps a lot.

 

I have had it so called "filled" two times and a 3rd time they could not duplicate so they put in a Toyota note or what ever they are called. So basically I got to hope the lag happens for the Toyota rep.

I am one of those people who got a free extended warranty on their trucks because of this. I just hope it does not turn out that it was still low fluid.

The shops Forman told me they did the drip test though, so I don't know.

 

I had 5R55E in it. Great 4 speed but it was like the Tacoma and always tried for OD. The extra weight and wind resistance made short order of it. Even the built one I installed later started having slippage issues faster than a stocker would. I should have put a built C4 in it and called it good. Would really be wound out at freeway speeds, but bullet proof.

I am not a fan of the drip test .
Get the transmission to temp , open the overflow bolt and let the transmission poor oil out .
There was mention of dripping in the Toyota procedure as being left over fluid or residual fluid .
I would like to hear that oil was pooring out the overflow and slowly came to a stop .
This way , we know the transmission is filled correctly

 

I could have just gone for some OMEs or Bilsteins. I didn't need anything fancy and no lift. Just something that rides better on ranch roads and hunting trips in back country

 

This is one of the additional tasks I have added to the poll to make sure you guys ask your dealers to carry out .
Apparently , we have the ability of clearing TCU short term memory or adaptive learning by removing the battery posts for 1/2 hour .
The Techstream is the only way to clear long term

 

The ROI on simple mods like that with the Rangers was about the same as wiping your ass with hundreds and flushing them down the toilet.

You could easily spend 2k on a suspension and see a negligible difference in ride quality. While the Torsion bar set ups were arguably stiffer than the strut XLTs, the main issue was how their frames flexed. You'd have to invest a lot more money into it than just different coil overs and springs to get a quality ride out of them. With that though comes all the wear and tear, even with just an MT set up.

Mine just started slipping slightly in 1st when I first get her going.

 

Only applies to the 4 cylinder. Hopefully one comes out for the 6 cylinder.

 

I never really noticed a delay until I finally got it filled right. Truck has more pick up and go and does not hunt on highway and RPM's don't run as high on highway. Before if truck downshifted on highway to maintain cruise speed It would not shift again. I also noticed improved gas mileage today as truck wasn't running higher RPM's at highway speed. Toyota did give me an extended warranty as I just got off the phone with them.

 

Do you know if they did the TCU reset?
