TSB for T/O Bearing Issue:

I'm not getting the chirping noises other have mentiioned. My problem is a rattleing noise while coating along in N OR while clutched in, AND while driving over bumps in the road. I thought it was just the hanging flywheel, BUT someone just said it could be the T/O bearing. Does anyone have a picture of what i should be looking for? It would heklp if i knew what i was talking about when going to the dealer...HELP!

 

I've been having a ridiculous amount of noise coming from the throwout bearing on my 2TR since roughly 7K on the truck. Has anyone else has this issue. I'm not sure if its just a fluke, inherent for this particular trans, or what, but something is definitely not right from what I can tell. The second you let the clutch out in neutral it makes a terrible rattling and chirping noise.

 

5 speed. That's why I'm kind of dumb found about it. I guess ill let the techs at Toyota check it out and see what they think.

The TO bearing chirp came back 4 days after the last fix. So they looked at it again. They said they called Toyota Canada Assistance and Toyota is apparently aware of the problem in Canada. The mechanic I talked to said that there is a large hex nut that holds the tranny and everything together. Apparently it needs to be torqued to 450 ft/lbs. Mine will be getting done in January now, as the parts are all on backorder. It will take 3 days, as they are going to be taking pictures and documenting every step of the disassembly and assembly process.

I don't know if they are telling the truth or not. It sounds like they are trying to figure out what's wrong though and not just saying tough, sorry about that buddy. I just hope they figure it out before my warranty expires in 8000kms.

I don't know, 450 ft/lbs of torque ? That's a really huge amount of torque to put on anything. That doesn't sound right. Maybe he has the value wrong, but it is interesting to note that maybe some parts are not being tightened properly ?

I haven't had a Tacoma or FJ Cruiser driveline apart yet but one large nut torqued to 450 ft/lbs holding everything together doesn't make sense.
Maybe he misinterpreted or the tech fed him a line. I've found more info about the T/O bearing & pilot shaft problem on the FJ Forums.

 

I notice my truck only chirps when it is not on level ground, with the front up, or even on a bit of a side hill. Anyone else have the same thing, or are you chirping all the time?

 

I have an 06 w 35k on it and it just started chirping about 1k ago. i have read like 40 pages on various forums today (we're in the middle of a 24"+ snow storm here in Md, nothing else to do) and it seems like all the fixes are temporary, even a new trans because eventually the pilot will wear out again. Is there an after market steel pilot shaft available or after market bell housing w a steel pilot shaft?

I bought my 06 certified used in sept. w 30k on it. The problem is that the dealership is two hours from where i live and i refuse to have to take my truck and have parts replaced 5 or 6 times in order to get a new bell housing or trans, especially if the problem will only come back.

This really pisses me off because i feel like i spent more money for the Toyota name/ reputation for reliability than i would have on a GM/Ford/Chrysler. But i figured it would be money well spent. Then a i get on this forum to investigate the possible origin of a squeak and find all this BS

Anyhow it just started so i doubt its a big problem...yet. If anyone gets a TSB #, post it!

The Taco's and FJ's share the same tranny and are having the same problems. What pi$$es me off is that last May I bought a brand new FJ with stick shift. I could have had an auto tranny as a brand new one was sitting next to my stick shift model on the lot. I opted for the stick because I was thinking long term durability. Since I recently retired, I didn't want to be spending 'stupid money' on expensive repairs. Color me dumb I guess !

Does anybody know the release bearing Toyota part number?

 

I bought my 2005 6 speed 3 months ago with 65,000 miles. I am having the same chirping problems that everyone on the thread is complaining about. Is there any chance that Toyota will atleast share the cost if the warranty is expired??

If you tackle this job, there is something you must look at very closely. See the att'd. pics of the TO Bearing and Pilot Shaft it rides on. The pilot shaft is getting buggered up where the TO Bearing rides on it and that is causing the noise. It seems to be because the pilot shaft is made of aluminum. The TO Bearing inner race is of course steel. Not a good combo to have against each other. There are many who consider this setup a crappy design. There are many owners who are getting everything (TO bearing, bellhousing, even the entire tranny) replaced under warranty. It's because the pilot shaft is non-replaceable.

I had my trans,complete clutch,flywheel replaced under warranty at 15000 mi. and it started squeeking again @ 20000mi. Took it back to the dealer{Northpark in San Antonio} and told them I wanted them to talk to Toyota before throwing more parts at it only to have it do it again. They agreed. Last week they finally called me back{ 1 month later} and told me that Toyota has a redesigned throwout bearing and release fork that will solve the problem for good but to be patient as it won't be available to dealers until FEBRUARY!!!! Was asked to please live with the noise till they call me in Feb. I agreed to wait. I really don't want them wrenching on my FJ any more than required. They also admitted that there are some Tacomas doing the same thing.

well darn. thought i had dodged a bullet because i've been reading all about the t/o bearing issues without any noises from mine at all. but the noises started yesterday and def doing it today (31k miles) ... just got the truck in september and between the clutch pedal squeak and the t/o bearing, this thing sounds like some old rusty pos. as others said here i really thought that the extra money i was putting out for the tacoma would keep me away from problems like this. really frustrating to hear that even the people getting it fixed are having the problem come back... ahh jeez. what to do?

 

I wrote a letter to Toyota Experience BS to to give them a piece of my mind. My truck is out of warranty and this started happening. They better do something for those of us who are out of warranty.

 

Okay... anything official yet??? Come on toyota, this will come back to haunt you!

 

nothing yet, they are busy working on the whole gas petal tsb thing..In school they showed how to "cut and reshape" the petal...

 

I just bought a used 2005 6 speed, 4x4 double cab and a week later noticed the squeel of death...

Checking to see if the powertrain warranty will be honored even though I am not the original owner.
