Thinking about taking my truck to Dumont dunes or Amargosa dunes, how will it do?

Will my truck be able to climb Banshee hill or comp at Dumont? Will I be able to do the big bowl fine and really get back into the dunes?
I saw this video of a Tacoma driving up what I believe is Oldsmobile Hill at Glamis in 2-wheel drive. I have never been to Glamis, but the video was impressive. I couldn't believe it. My truck is only a 4-cylinder, maybe the driver had a V-6. A 2-wheel drive going up that incline in a basically stock truck is unreal. Out at Nellis dunes, I don't even try stuff in 2. Maybe next time I will air down and try 2-wheel drive.

 

I haven't tried dunes but I've driven in silt and sand and gotten stuck in it, Just remember to air down before not after you get stuck. Keep your momentum going, Momentum is key to not getting stuck.

 

Dumont is my stomping grounds, I'm there every few weeks during the season.
I have seen a few trucks out in the dunes getting around just fine, but it is all about knowing how to drive so you don't roll.
My friend has a Tracker that he takes everywhere in the dunes and he is pretty much our 'recovery/tow' vehicle. He airs his tires waaaaay down, he's running bfg muds.
I've seen a 1st gen reg cab Taco out there a few times and he seems to get around pretty well, so if you have the skills you could do it.

Amargosa, I'm sure you could go just about everywhere out there since its much smaller and not as soft as Dumont.

I have been riding quads at dumont for the last 10 years and I have seen plenty of full-size trucks and tracker/samurai, but no Tacomas. The big horsepower rigs really tear it up on the hills.

 

The Tracker is a 4cyl, it goes everywhere in the dunes. It goes up Banshee with no problem, it won't go all the way up Comp starting from the bottom, but he takes it up the back sides and sits up top to watch and goes down the front. It goes places side by sides can't go and he can keep up in a line of no/mid travel rails.
I know a couple people with Samurai's and they get around just fine also.
Ford Rangers come in 4cyl, I've seen a few of those in the dunes also.
I haven't seen any full sized stock trucks actually 'duning', but I've seen quite a few stuck or rolled.
I have a few pics somewhere, but I can't get to them right now.

I'd think you could get up Banshee off to the right side, maybe half way up comp, and around the dunes out in the back towards the flats without a problem. Start back there and try it, just have someone ready to tow you out.

 

I took the truck to Amargosa today. 2wd got me nowhere in the dunes. 4lo seemed to be the ticket. I didn't have any other trucks out there with me, but I went deep into the dunes. At the front hill, I could basically make it to the first step. If there were some other trucks out there I am sure I would have been a lot more aggressive.
There was one 2 wheel-drive V-8 S-10 that was tearing it up.

 

Glad you were able to get around the dunes a bit. Did you air down your tires??

I was able to do some duning at Dumont. The truck did well. I was able to pull start one of my friend's LT buggies that had died. This guy was running around on a late model Explorer with 5 people on street tires that were not aired down. He got stuck in one spot so I pulled him out. For the most part he was tearing it up. Next moment I saw him stopped with steam coming out from his hood. I pulled up to him and antifreeze was gushing out of a hole in his radiator. Fun to watch how able his machine was until the heat caught up. I saw an old school Jeep Cherokee that was following buggies anywhere. Duning in a truck is definitely a challenge.
