as most of ya know........ogt the 04 that i was looking for. and i realize there is a good power decrease going from the 4.0 to the 3.4, but when accelerating, it wants to rev pretty high, and not get up to speed as quick as i think it should. im going to clean the throttle body.....its dirty as hell, and im changing my fuel filter too......gonna change out the plugs next week, as im pretty sure they are the originals. got my deck plate coming tomorrow also.

im thinking that the fuel system was never cleaned on this truck, so im about to run a bottle of techron thru the tank, and i think everything i mentioned will help with gaining back some accel., but does anyone have any more input, suggestions and whatnot??? gonna get an afe pro dry s pretty soon too.

you should upgrade to the second gen. They're much quicker. :p

If your injectors are too far gone, a bottle of techron probably won't help. I'd probably do a bottle with only a quarter tank of gas left.

How about dumping some BG 44K in the tank...it should help clean pretty well. I've used it before and it made a difference in gas mileage, too.

You can get it at NAPA. It's kind of pricey...$40-$50 a can, but its worth it. Or, you can find a shop somewhere who can flush your whole fuel system with it. That's really pricey...about $150. It works pretty good, but that's jut my opinion, and I had it done on a 2001 Eclipse V6.

Congrats on your '04 TM! As you get comfortable driving the double cab 4x4 as it is designed to be driven, you'll soon get past any comparison with the '06 Prerunner you had leased. Yea, it may not be quite as quick, but then the 3.4L engine is not the same as the 4.0L, and your double cab 4x4 is not the same as the Prerunner you drove!

As Chris4x4 noted in another thread:

"Well, the engine on the first gens is a 3.4, and you cant go wrong with them.

    "The
5VZ-FE is a 3.4 L (3378 cc) engine. Bore is up to 93.5 mm (3.7 in) and stroke is 82.0 mm (3.2 in). Output is 190 hp (142 kW) at 4800 rpm with 220 ft·lbf (298 Nm) of torque at 3600 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses MFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and features large cast connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.

"The 5VZ-FE also continued the 3VZ-FE's trend of being far overbuilt for its intended application & many stock, semi-modified non-turbo and non-suprecharged engines continue to be considered one of the more reliable small truck or SUV V6 engines ever made. A handful of built versions exceed 900 hp (670 kW), and some stock engines can produce 450 hp (336 kW) or more. This has become a popular engine to consider when doing engine swaps with the availability of the 3.4 L TRD superchargerturbocharger setups.

"Also, as it is an cast iron engine block, if there is ever a problem with a scored cylinder wall, or the like, it can be easily bored out, and rebuilt. The 4.0 (1GR-FE) is aluminum, and can not be rebuilt.
The 3.4 is a smooth running engine, and with regular maintenance (the big one being 90,000 miles timing belt replacement), it will last longer than the chassis its mounted in. :)"

So, all things considered, you will find that in the long run the low mileage '04 you just bought with the 3.4L engine proves to be just as "bullet proof" as its reputation says it will, and you'll be tickled to death with the way it takes care of you!

All those are good things that need doing TM, and in particular the new plugs will make a difference along with clean filters. Your '04, with the relatively few miles it has on it, needs only regular maintenance and good care, and it will do everything you'd ever want it to do for as long as you need it to.

What with the price of filling up at the gas pump these days, unless you are somehow independently wealthy and have no reason to be concerned for cost (which I don't believe for a second!), you'll keep your foot light on the gas pedal and watch your shift points as you nurse every mile out of a gallon that you possibly can! Most of us are putting our hot rodding days behind us while reaching for ways and means of improving mileage. Out accelerating the guy next to us at the stop light or up a steep grade is no longer all that cool dude, while getting 2 or 3 more miles per gallon is a very cool thing!!

just did that buddy......ran half a can thru the brake booster line, and i cleaned the throttle body with sea foam deep creep, along with changing the oil to mobil1, and i changed my fuel filter........it had some nasty rusty looking crap coming outta it. the previous owner apparently didnt take real good care of the truck............now......its gonna get the premium package deal from me:D!!!

after running the seafoam, as normal, it smoked the neighborhood up pretty good. but its idling pretty damn good right now, and im gonna add my techron to the gas tank. that should help clean out the fuel system. ordered my deckplate today...........got the 6 inch, as he said they only could get 4 inch or 6 inch, so hopefully it'll fit. getting the plugs and changing them next week, and im gonna order an afe pro dry s when i get some more $.

shocks are gonna be next on my list too.......they had some crappy tokico hp shocks on there, and i can tell they are almost shot from off roading.

now, im gonna go change the diff's oil's and the transfer case too............maybe i'll wait till tomorrow after work to do that.

Good on ya! ..By the way, I've looked for photos of your new ride but all I see is the leased Prerunner you just unloaded. ..Or am I missing something?

Verry nice 04 TM! Just like mine, except an 04. :) you'll def. love it! I baby mine like crazy... and after a little bit of modding I did notice my acc. go up a bit. Not much since I got the 285/75's on there.
