I have a feeling the "4th gen" will basically be a minivan. Basically a Honda Ridgeline. Unibody. They are going to need to shed weight to hit the EPA standard in the future. That's they only way I seen them accomplishing that unless they go hybrid or full electric. Not even sure hybrid will cut it.

Guess I better get my popcorn ready now. I'm sure I just created a :crapstorm:

I had an 05 Frontier crew cab. The Tacoma wins in every way.

You will injure your spine sliding in and out of a Canyon/Colorado. The plastic on the side of the seat is painful.

Nope. GM products belong in a junkyard.

I had a 2011 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, CC. I liked it although dated, but it gave me zero problems. The only thing I didn't like was that it only got 16 mpg no matter what. The only real reason I traded it other than poor mpg, is I just like to change vehicles every Five years or so. So now I have my new Taco, SR5, AC, 4 banger, 4x4 which in the segment is a lower trim level than my Nissan. Having said all that I like my new one much more.

Very F150 like, but the Ford looks much better!

I honestly don't know what to make of it. None of the truck really flows or has a distinctive styling cue. It looks like a mish-mash of everything.

I thought maybe if I saw it in person it would look much better (like the 3rd gen Taco) but not really.

I don’t own a Frontier, never have but have looked at them every time I’ve looked to buy a truck.
And every time I’ve agonized over the decision because it’s cheaper than the Taco from the start and has good or better paper specs.
But upon close examination, it’s always lost to Toyota for me.
For one, it’ll bring you a big trade in loss vs Toyota should you trade it.
To replace the spark plugs (while still under drive-train warranty) the intake manifold has to be removed costing BIG $$.
There are other issues I won’t go into here, but the biggest thing that pi$$es me off is that the alternator is at lowest it can be on the engine, while Toyota has at the highest it can be on the engine.
This is a big issue to me as these things aren’t water proof, they do resist water well, but aren’t water/mud proof.
I’ve driven toys with water coming over my hood from driving thru storm flooded streets for up to a 1/4 mile and these toys just don’t stop nor have I ever had charging system issues after it’s all said and done.
Moreover, my ’16 Taco will beat smitty’s cause it’s a beast in power, and somehow they put a mini van engine inside of his. :D

    Cheers!

One can never have too many light bars.
I came from an 05 Frontier. My old truck suffered from typical first model year problems but luckily it was still under warranty. Other than that it was a great truck. It felt more solid than my Tacoma and handled better as well. Engine felt great but the trade off is that I was only able to get to about 16 mpg if I was feathering it on the highway. I got rid of it at around 98K miles so I can't speak about the longevity.

Well "frontier" is just the name for the navara in the US, so unless they decided to release an all new frontier thats no longer a navara then yes thats the monstrosity that will be the next frontier.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Navara

And the ridgeline is a minivan lol. Honestly though i dont tow or haul heavy loads so if the ridgeline came in stick id check it out.

Well more like the GM twins have no love for stick shifts since you can only get a stick in 4x2 not 4x4.

How do you like the 4 banger? I thought about it for a bit, wish it was a 6 speed stick like the v6 rather than the 5 but at this point the 4cyl and 5sp tranny seem to have 0 issues since their a carry over from 2nd gen.

Yeah the milage definitely blows but im usually able to get decent milage the way i drive stick. I only live 10 miles from work though so milage isnt much of a factor for me, id rather a 4.0 v6 with good power and no problems than the dinky 3.5 that seems to need to have some kinks worked out.

I have a king cab Pro-4x 6spd, great truck all around. Phenomenal engine, looks sharp, fuel economy is good, nice features and really good standard equipment (265/75R16 Hankook ATMs even!)

I'm not as much a fan of the automatic, crew cab or other trims. A brand new truck like mine is still less than $30,000 CAD new.

So far I'm liking the 4 banger and the much improved mpg. I don't tow or haul anything so for me it's perfect. I only have 500 miles on it so I guess time will tell.

You would think that after 10 years or so it would have been able to shed off some weight...but instead it got heavier with the smaller engine and newer/lighter transmission.

"Toyota updated the truck's frame by adding more high strength steel in order to increase the truck's rigidness and to drop weight. The body is also constructed using ultra-high strength steel that will be integrated using a new hot stamping process that reduces weight." - from wikipedia

What I want to know is with all those changes, how could it be heavier? Must be from all the technology that has been added to it.

I know some people on here have mentioned something about the hoods being really heavy...not sure if it is in fact heavier than the 2nd gens, but it's little things like that, that can add up to shed off weight.

Then again it is toyota, which has been known to be conservative and go with what works.

F150 is only about 700 pounds heavier and makes a lot more power.

Yea the pro4x 6sp is the only trim i care for. I do wish that the manual also had leather and power seats like the auto does but when you're looking for a stick you cant be too picky nowadays.

Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the weight difference is in the extra sound deadening materials. Might be a few extra electronic modules also. But the front bumper is plastic now even though there is a steel reinforcement behind it you know it's not as heavy as a second gens front bumper. I'd imagine the hoods are about the same weight. I know the frame has some added support even though they used a higher strength steel. That will add as well

The reason I didn't buy a 3rd gen Tacoma is too much is carried over from the 2nd gen. My 2nd gen had lots of issues I didn't want to relive. The smaller engine and higher curb weight didn't appeal to me.

The Frontier was a total unknown but has been really great. I'm excited to see the 3rd gen which appears to be the NP300 Navara, if so I know what my next truck will be!
