I could be wrong about this, but I think if you go 255 you will need to a bit of lift or you might get some rub. 235's will fit stock I am pretty sure. I am looking at the 235's myself. I always liked the skinner tire.

Yeah... a much more similar comparison would be 235/85/16 and 265/75/16. The 255's are almost 34" in diameter and more comparable to 285/75/16's for both diameter and weight. Most of those sizes are only available as E rated tires. 265's are available in lighter casings.

The 255's would probably wreak havoc with your transmission unless you regear. Something to think about.

I'm running 255/75/17 Goodyear MTRs little on my 2012 and love them, trying to find a similar size for the 16inch rim on my incoming 2016 try off road. Will be taking the 5100s from the 2012 and adding to the 2016. I'm wanting the closest tire to a 255/75/17 without having to cut anything and wondering if anyone is running the 255/85/16 on their 3rd get

Bilstein 5100's all around (2nd Gen) OME 888's in front set at 0 Wheeler's AAL SCS Ray 10's in Gunmetal TRD Pro Grille Baja Designs Squadron amber fogs
just bought 255/85/16 dick cepek extreme country tires. They are 32.8 in diameter, so not quite 33's. Still skinnier than the 285/75/16 tires. I am going to try adjustable bilsteins set at .85 in front with stock rear and see how much rub/chopping is required! Will update when I am done and aligned.

Are you planning on staying stock height? If so then go 265/75r16. If you're going to lift it, go 255/85r16. I'm a fan of the pizza cutters and will be replacing my 265/70r17s with 255/80r17 when they're worn out.

What's the benefit of 255's or a skinnier tire. I'm in the market and recently have noticed a lot of overlanders running skinnier tires. I want to travel the country and overland but don't really want to give up any capabilities. I'll have a Toytec boss lift to go with whatever tires I chose.

Two major things come to mind. Weight savings, and not having to cut up your truck to clear the tires. This is compared to a 285/70r17 which is popular here.

So 255/80/17 would be a better option than say a 275/70/17? I don't mind the look of the skinnier tire I just don't know what the negatives would be for off-road capability.

I've skimmed through this super scientific article before and it basically said that skinnier tires are actually "better" than wide ones. I think for 99% of people here (myself included) it won't make any difference. IMO, the skinnier tire is better based on the weight savings alone. Your MPG won't take as big of a hit.

Awesome. I see the Cooper STT MAXX has a 255/80/17 tire. What are the popular choices of tires for the guys running 255's?

That size right there! Are you lifted? You won't be able to clear those on stock suspension.

Yeah I'll have the Toytec boss suspension lift. Any other people make that size besides the coopers?

Sure! As far as I know, it's a fairly common size. I know the maxx is a great tire though. My buddy runs them on his 4runner

I'm going 255/70/17 when my OEM tires where out. Better choices for construction for what I want than the tires with a larger aspect ratio.

looks like 255/85/16 is going to be the closest thing i can get to my current 255/75/17. My goodyear mtrs are 32.3 and the DICK CEPEK EXTREME COUNTRY at 32.8 with same width should be perfect. was hoping someone was running this setup with 5100s at .85 and could speak to clearance, ride, look, etc.

Why not 255/80/17 from Cooper STT MAXX?
