OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

My bushing is still running quiet with no vibe. I do have a diff drop on my Toytec lift. Maybe that helps. Hate to see folks remove their lift because of this crap.

 

I just put my 2" lift on Monday night, drove to get alignment for Tuesday had the vibe. Got the alignment drove home had the vibe. Drove Wednesday in 4wd no vibe. Lift comes off Thursday with less then 10 miles on it. Wish I would have saw this thread before I did the lift.

 

Yea it is bull crap you cant lift a 4x4 truck a couple of inches without having problems. If i was you i would buy the ecgs bushing an put it in if they wouldnt fix it under warrenty. My warrenty needle bearing is still hanging in there on my 2015. An i have a ecgs bushing on stand by if it comes back. By the time you swap out lift with stock stuff you could have the new bearing in. Might as well have ur truck set the way u want it if your gonna have to work on it anyway.

 

An not to beat a dead horse. But taking the lift off wont fix the bearing. Its already toast at this point. An some people still hear it even at stock levels. I would suggest changing the diff fluid too. To make sure you dont have any shavings in it. Or atleast i did an it made me feel alot better after the situation.

 

Installed my bushing yesterday. Hardest part was changing the axle seal. Lot's of build up and corrosion on the outside and mating surface. But, once resolved everything went fine. AND my vibration is gone at 50km/h. YAY I'm so happy that it worked as I'd hoped. ECGS makes a good product and their shipping time up to Edmonton (Canada) was the best I've ever dealt with. (24 hour) Good product and great results. Very happy with the decision. Big thanks to the guys at ECGS.

 

Don't get bummed and remove your lift. The ECGS bushing is $60 plus the seal $12-$20 and labor if you want a differential/transmission co to do the work. All in I was $460ish. Sucks I had to do it, but in my mind I consider it an upgrade with my lift and other mods. Just like everyone, I am pissed at Toyota for this, but I will not let this bum me out on my new truck. Also, keep in mind there are posts on TW of new stock trucks (no lift) experiencing the problem. The needle bearing sleeve needs to be replaced with a more durable bushing. Same thing here. I was told I should have done my homework first before I lifted it. Like who looks up Tacoma vibs when installing a 2.5" lift. The Toyota police come out of the woodwork when you start complaining about their beloved trucks. Some people have had the vibs with a stock truck, I guess those idiots should have done their homework also.

 

It seems that the 2016 tacomas are more sensitive than the years past. Reason unkwown at this time, should be the same thing? You guys know Tac's better then me. I know the diff is the same what have they changed about suspension in the 16's anything?

I was told they didn't change anything, good for you guys$$$ Their bearing specs must be all over the place. some can lift them 3" with no problems and some have had issues when stock, go figure.....or maybe the CV axle shafts specs differ.

 

A lot of 2016 owners have stated that the 2016 Tacomas are 1" higher in front than 2nd gens, so Toyota did something different in the front suspension.

 

The front fender measures 1" higher off the ground, (new body style) that has nothing to do with suspension. 2nd and 3rd Gen CV axles are level from the diff to the front wheel bearings when stock. I was told by Toyota the platforms are the same so If I am wrong then Toyota told me wrong. I wouldn't take what they say to the bank, just passing along the info.

 

Stock lower control arms are different on the 2016s. In my case, I upgraded with a Toytec 3" lift, Bilstein 5100s and new coils. Also, replaced the weak stock upper control arms with a pair on Total Chaos arms. Way better. Happy with my truck, but Toyota does cut corners in places where they think customers won't notice.

 

When you say different do you mean lighter material, shape, or what?

 

2nd gen 9.3" ground clearance----3rd gen 9.4" ground clearance says edmonds.com, for what it's worth!!!

 

Mine is having the same sensation, almost like a cell phone vibe if your getting a phone call or text. I have 3700 miles on mine and am kind of annoyed with the whole situation.

 

The lower A-arm has been beefed up with high strength steel.

 

Mine was the same, and mine had nothing to do with "needle bearing failure", seeing I had less than 1000k on it. It has to do with sloppy tolerances between the needle bearing and the CV shaft, and then the increased angle on the CV shaft when lifted magnifies the original problem that has been going on for "years" now.

@mike15 Like others have said give the bushing a try before removing your lift. If you have a good Dealer they may do it for you under warranty. I don't know why mine didn't work but overall the bushing seems to be a 100% fix. Good luck
