I recently bought a 99 taco prerunner that had a slew of problems and now im at tires and now i have another possible issue. On the door jam the stock wheels were 225/75R15 but the tires it has on it now are 245/75R16. everything else seems to be stock even the rims are Toyota rims but the tire size according to my research is not stock what could these rims have come from. Also im looking for a decent set of tires for cheap but looking to keep the rims since i cant afford a new set. My question is what would be the difference if i were to get 225/75R16 since they are significantly cheaper. Also what other problems could i get from these bigger tires besides gas mileage.

I just got a 99 4x4 and these r the rims that came on it. Im pretty sure these are what you should have:IMG_8555.jpg
I dont recognize those that you have but i cant think of any problems from using them. Ur speedo may be a little off and your gas milage may suffer a little but as long as they dont rub i think you are fine. For the number code, the first number is the width so the narrower tires you are considering should help with your milage a little and any clearance issues you may have (although i doubt you will really have any as 16" rims are a common upgrade i believe). Im sure others that are more knowledgable than myself will chime in too

If it really is a '99 TRD model (as the fender sticker indicates), it has a 4.10:1 gear ratio and came with 31" tall tires. Either 31x10.5r15s (most likely) or 265/70r16s.

By comparison, the 245/75r16s on it now are slightly smaller than original stock.

What is the diff code on that door jam sticker? Is it B03A? Do you have an elocker? A diff lock button on your dash? If the answer is yes to those questions, your truck came with 31"s originally.

I would bet me lunch money it came with 31x10.5x15 tires.

Went to forestry college with a guy that had a '99 trd 4x4 (same as pre runner except 4x4) and that's what his came with new. The newer 1st gen tacoma's switched to 16" rims, pretty sure the same year they got the face lift in 2001.

After some browsing it looks like those are some rims from a 1997ish landcruiser in case you were wondering...full_be2c2720f58f50885c1c2aef373a6c1446a71f5e.jpg
Also if you were to switch tires from the stock size (according to door jam) to the 225/75 R16 the variations would be as follows:
    Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 10.23.11 PM.jpg
(This is from the tire size calculator here on tacomaworld) So your speedo wont be much off, as long as you keep the variation in mind you should b good

Which direction is it off and by how much?

Get an app on your phone that can measure your speed via GPS. The Maverick app is what I use. Compare your GPS speed in the app to what your speedometer reads. For example, what does the speedo read when the app says you are going 70 mph?

Well you learn something every day. Those are small tires for a Trd.
