No, dealers are a ripoff because they don't sell anything that doesn't cost much less elsewhere. If it isn't 500% markup they think they are being ripped off.

Cases in point - just the other day...drive belt tensioner pulley quoted $80 at multiple dealerships but same part, oem, in oem box from online was $34 shipped. Sure that is only 200 and some % higher but you get the drift.

They tell you only way to get a certain part is buy whole assembly but magically you can find the single part elsewhere. (example of key fob shell thing)

$60 -$80 to swap cabin air filter at dealership or $24 for just one filter has been heard buy many who posted in threads on here but magically you can score filters, even oem one for $5 or less elsewhere.

    Stock for now
My point was that replacements CAN be purchased elsewhere. And yes. The dealer is a rip off. Feel free to purchase anything you like from them at highly inflated prices. This is a thread about dealers pulling BS stunts. My experience was with a local dealer pulling a bs stunt.

said someone who has no idea how it works

example: your replacement part...ok so you think it works ?

    -does it cause cancer ?
-when on fire does it create toxic smoke
-does it interfere with the keyfob radios
-does it cause rashes to human skin
-if eaten by a baby, will it kill the baby...

and the list goes on and on and on, for that ONE small part.

Multiply this by the 34,000 small parts on your tacoma and by the 22 different types of vehicles
the dealer sells....and all these tiny parts and what you think should be cheap that are parts of subassemblies

and are you going to be covered for all these little parts in case anything goes wrong with any of them
and are they serviceable or not ?

the dealer will sell you a subassembly and go no further in the constituent parts of those assemblies.
they won't be able to remain a car dealer for long if they did.

You can service yourself on Amazon with any friggin part or aftermarket part you choose, that is what you do if
you cannot afford the real item or choose not to pay for it

but it does NOT scale up to the dealership level. they would need triple the distribution center warehouse space
and quadruple the logistics to make YOU happy for all these tiny ass parts. ain't no one got time for that.

you are not getting ripped off even though you may think so....

stop bitching about very excellent distribution and parts sales systems.

it works for 99% the world.

yes is costs money to own a modern vehicle and keep it running. you have to PAY to PLAY

    ------------
what really would make you look like a super hero is saying it like

hey anyone replacing a keyfob part I found a source that is cheaper !

see ? positive and exciting. instead of the drivel 'The dealership is ripping me off
    whine whine whine...blah blah blah....'

I get it, we all get it. hate to spend more coin than necessary.. where the snap analysis says 'the fuckers are ripping us off'. but step back and think about the big picture ....there are -reasons- behind the curtain ya know.

In a recent thread, someone stated that the Parts Dept. was a dealerships primary revenue center. I suppose that could be true.

Now back to your comment. If the item you seek is cheaper elsewhere, then go elsewhere and buy it.

Duh, I do. The dealership is only used for reference to see how much cheaper the same exact oem part can be had elsewhere. I am comparing oem to oem not oem vs the cheapest most toxic knockoff aftermarket piece China has to offer. I understand the dealership has to profit to keep it afloat but the ridiculous differences in prices just keeps getting worse and worse as do the sales tactics of subassemblys and assemblys vs just the item having an issue. That = ripoff and is why they don't get my money.

you know who makes this happen ? consumers who need to have the latest and greatest flashy bullshit in a truck

if you just want a metal truck to do truck duty you get 4x4, motor, gas tank, steering, and a bed

but no, I need bluetooth and itunes and gps and all this non-truck duty shit wonderland
and toyota and the dealer has to keep up with all that extra bullshit, they cannot be accountable
to handle the keys anymore. they are suffocated in ancillary bullshitting-up-of-the-basic-truck

sorry, but it all you peoples fault. I still have a flip phone and make basic calls and never text. do you
have a smart phone ? then you are one of THEM who caused this malarkey. :anonymous:

it's just the way it is in consumerville. buy it, toss it out, buy it again gladly paying double cause it's newer than the one before. oh yeah almost forgot it can still barely do truck duty...but look at the entune and JBL !!!!

Sad thing is that similar nonsense has happened to us all. There's a reason people call them stealerships.

very well put...someone that gets it.

but, dealerships have bad reputations so as soon as 1 guy posts a "bad experiance" with a dealership....the herds come out by the dozens to add fuel to the fire.

I'll go to the dealer for parts, as long as we aren't talking multiple factors in markup. I won't order online unless I can't get it locally, or the local price is so badly inflated (double or more) that I can't stomach it. There is an inherent value to shopping locally, paying local taxes and keeping the money generated here. It pays the salaries of the guy down the street, builds parks and playgrounds, helps the fire and police, and keeps my property taxes lower when revenues spent in town generate sales tax. Does it occasionally cost me a few dollars more than I could order it on Amazon? Yeah, but worth it for me in the long run. If the point comes that I'm worried about paying the extra few dollars then I will probably be selling the truck anyway.

I can admit that there will be occasions when the work you pay for doesn't get done properly or where someone makes a mistake. By politely calling it to the attention of someone in charge I don't have difficulty in getting an issue corrected. I take a box of donuts or a couple of sausage biscuits in and give it to the service manager. While I'm there I drop in and say hi to the salesman and trade a few jokes. They treat me well, and if I don't feel right about something they make it right. Small niceties pay big dividends in the long run. I do the same with a local mechanic/shop where I take vehicles when it is something I don't feel like doing myself. Got my daughter's AC charged the other day for free when the owner said don't worry about it and refused to give me a bill (known him for 30 years). I'll take my daughters car back next month for a brake job (which I could easily do myself) and pay his price, which I know will be a fair price for the work, just to pay things forward a little cause I want him there the next time I'm out of town and my kid breaks down on the side of the road. I know he'll take care of her.

I've digressed but the point I wanted to make is that by buying things where you live you invest in the community and the future.
