This happened on Jan 9th of this year. I was heading down the 5 freeway in L.A. and hit a person standing in the freeway lanes. He lived. This is reason, I gather, that the sheetmetal on our trucks is so soft. All totaled, ~$5,500 in damage, insurance fixed it, CHP found the pedestrian at fault.

    Thought I should share.

Oh my god. How in the world did that person survive? How are you doing psychologically? I'm sure that would cause some nightmares or something... Anywho, I'm glad everyone is all right.

They survived cause I jammed the brakes through the floor and the truck crumpled around them. Not injury free mind you but very much alive. As for me, I did not sleep well or at all for about a week.

The pedestrian you hit has to be a win, place, or show candidate for the Darwin award. Be careful gentlemen, you never can tell what you'll see out there.

My buddy, driving a 07 Jeep Wrangler, hit a kid on a skateboard that ran a red light about two months ago. He couldn't sleep well for a month - my buddy, that is; don't know about the kid. Kid survived but he will never walk right again.

I will add a bit more detail. If you know Los Angeles decently then this happened right before the Glendale Blvd exit on the 5 south at night. There are not a lot of lights in the area and I was in a welcomed long break in traffic, meaning there were no other cars around me. I was doing about 65 MPH and the guy, wearing dark clothes of course, was standing dead center of the lane staring at me. I had maybe 2 seconds between seeing him and impact. I watched him slide up my hood and then get thrown from my truck forward about 50 feet. Luckily due to the lull in traffic I did not get rear ended.

I'm glad you are doing alright OP. That is a tough thing for anyone to have to go through.
As for the guy, well, don't walk in the middle of the freeway.

The CHP report states that "God told him to spread the word" on the freeway. Nothing against religion but there are crazies out there

Wasn't listed in the report, I imagine that they did but I did not see anything about it. Of course the guy got an ambulance chaser and my insurance settled.

Should this happen to anyone else in CA here is the CA VC that the police cited in putting the pedestrian at fault:

21954. (a) Every pedestrian upon a roadway at any point other than
within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an
intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the
roadway so near as to constitute an immediate hazard.
    (b) The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of
a vehicle from the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any
    pedestrian upon a roadway.

Funny thing is the lawyer for the pedestrian cited the same one.

How fast would you guess you were going at the moment of impact, after slamming the brakes trying to stop?

Damn, sucks man. Besides the religious aspect as stated in the report, think they were trying to commit suicide?

Here in Bako, they jump in front of trains. Doesn't work out for them very well and makes a big mess.

You're lucky you that's how it works down there. Here, the pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way. It's always the driver's fault.
