I "test drive" over to a trusted mechanic and pay them to inspect truck before purchasing. That said.. you have gotten hammered on this thread and you responded much nicer than I would have. Hope you stick around tacomaworld and don't give up on tacoma's

Hey gang,

I thought I would share my story since I am still dealing with it after the better part of two months.

In the first half of the month of March, my freshly lifted (OME w/Dakar pack 3" lift, LR UCA's and 285/75/16 BFG TKO1) 2006 TRD Off Road Access Cab 6 Speed manual indigo pearl Tacoma was stolen from right in front of my apartment in a secure access parking garage. There has yet to be any recovery of the vehicle. This 06 had just had the frame replacement the week that I bought it and with 99k miles, it felt like a brand new truck. Since dealing with the loss of this vehicle, we pursued another Tacoma. I was able to find the exact truck. Literally the exact same thing. Same price, miles, frame replacement, color, everything was the exact same minus the lift and tires of course. I live in CO and bought the truck in MI. I know I know, rust belt. I get that. Considering the low price of the truck (14k w/99k miles!) and the frame replacement having been done only weeks before purchase, I bought it. I have owned rust belt Tacomas before and what ones I have owned from that part of the US had all gone through their frame replacements. I haven't had much issue with any of them yet including dealing with replacing the OEM suspension with my preferred OME lift. This truck that I recently purchased however, wouldn't move when I tried to leave the dealership in Ann Arbor, MI. The power output was fine but the rear left tire was locked up. I went inside and basically made fun of them for selling me a truck that wouldn't leave the lot. The used car manager said it must have been stuck in between gears. I have never heard of this but I assumed it could be possible. He "fixed" the issue in about two minutes by slamming gears around and peeling out in the parking lot before parking it again, handing me the keys and bidding me a safe trip back to CO. Upon getting home (it drove fine for the 1,500 mile trip minus the discovery of no cruise control, a/c and once the vehicle cooked in the sun, I discovered significant cigarette smell. I investigated for burns to solidify my findings and found about a dozen through out the truck) I had the truck thrown up at my local shop for some new brake pads since I could feel a lack of stopping power.

What we discovered:

two bad cv axles and boots
two bad rear bearings and seals
near complete failure of both rear drums
No pads whatsoever on front calipers
cabin and engine air filters each had about an inch of dead organic material on them
(not that big of a deal)

So I paid for new rotors, calipers and pads for the front for about $600 and in addition I got a $300 detail job that guaranteed to rid vehicle of cigarette smell. it worked. I contacted the dealership about the rest since my mechanic suggested I don't drive it until its fixed. After about two weeks of waiting for a response, I took the matter to Toyota corporate which if you haven't experienced yet, they are wonderful and have been incredibly supportive through out this now three week ordeal. The dealership neglected to contact me even after corporate told them to respond to me within 48 hours of the claim I filed against them.

As of today: The dealership I purchased the truck from called me a liar when I told them that I didn't ever ask anyone to hoist the truck so I could inspect it myself. They told me I did. I said check your cameras. I saw that they had them all over the place. They got real quiet after I told them to check the footage. In the end, they called me a liar several times, offered me $500 towards the rear drums and shoes, never mind the money I have already put into the truck. I made corporate aware of this and they are conducting their own, private investigation into the dealership of what they did. They are liars and thieves and all they cared about was commission and getting the truck off of the lot and they took advantage of me not being able to physically see the truck until the day I flew in and picked it up. Corporate offered me $500 as well to say sorry for what you are going through. I have accepted both the dealership $500 and the corporate $500 and since my very expensive warranty is covering the huge bulk of the work, this additional $1k I just got will cover the rest that is left over. Over all, I am still out about $1k of my own even after the cash offered from the two mentioned groups and I haven't had a working vehicle for now three weeks out of the five weeks I've owned the truck so far. The positive to this is that the truck will be in really good shape once all of this is done and I will have a new found confidence in conducting my overland build on her.

What I experienced from the dealership was unacceptable. The President of the dealership called me a liar on four separate notes, he yelled at me, spoke over me, shut me down when in the middle of my sentences. The funniest part is that I speak to people who are dealing with significant life issues and I always always always keep my cool and calm in check. He really made a fool of himself by getting so irate when his complaining customer is maintaining a level head. I had to explain to him that we would conduct a much better conversation if we met each other at the same tone of voice and volume of speech. He didn't like that very much. In the end, I have lost the money but have gained the support of Toyota Corporate and and pleased to be on my 8th Tacoma and will forever and always be a loyalist to the brand.

Worth the read because I think it can be a learning lesson for some, myself included. Furthermore, the read highlights the support of the brand we all are obvious advocates for. So yes, I do believe its worth your two minutes of reading if it can prevent someone else from going through the same experience.

I know! The initial, visual inspection left me with no concerns about cigarette burns because they were in really weird locations that I actually had to go looking for. The truck smelled heavy of cleaning solutions which didn't stand out too much since it was coming from a dealership. I figured it was the smell of a detail job. Since it was early morning (0900) when I picked it up, it was still very cloudy and cold and the smell of the truck hadn't "cooked" yet. hours later when I was already gone, the truck cooked up enough in the sun to release the casino smell. I then looked and found the cigarette burns. In addition, the truck didn't brake well at all but I down shift when slowing and it didn't stand out as a significant issue until I braked without a downshift ( I never do this, it was an accident I was trying to avoid ) and thats when I really noticed the lack of true stopping power. It was border line life threatening.

Well Ill promise you that the whole story about how the customer had a tech hoist the truck so they could visually inspect it together was a complete lie that someone had to make up, because it wasn't me. The cameras proved that just fine to Toyota Corporate. If nothing else I said was true, this isolated problem should be enough to terminate the guy who sold me the truck. You cant call somebody a liar because you made up a lie about them and they disagreed. However, yes, there is always two sides. It just a shame that the other side is made up of fairytales to cover the arses of those involved.

I am happy to offer clarity; when I buy used Tacomas ( I do this A LOT, like, a lot a lot ) I ask basic questions about the vehicle's condition; interior, exterior, tech notes for inspection, etc. What answers I was given over the phone over the course of almost two weeks were all completely made up. They told me the inspection took care of all issues and the truck was ready to go. The problem at hand is that this dealership not only told me what I believed as accurate information, but they tried to cover up the lie about its condition to corporate. My local Toyota service center has also entered the case because their inspection notes couldn't be further apart from the notes from the selling dealership. I have bought more old Tacomas the most and I know how they should run, more or less. This transaction was unacceptable. Period. I have never dealt with this issue before in my entire truck buying life ( 13 years now ) and if this had come from a private party with the same lies and made up nonsense, you would read it a lot differently.

I am happy to unveil who did this to me because my 14k truck with my 3k warranty (so my 17K truck) will have costed me 18k (or 22-23k if I had paid for the work myself) which is completely unreasonable to do to somebody. The proud owner of this mess is
Dunning Toyota of Ann Arbor, MI. I have yet to receive an apology for ANYTHING and instead was offered a $500 hush hush and a legal letter to be signed saying that I accept the money as a way of freeing the dealership from any further responsibility. I have yet to cash it or sign anything. My legal counsel is still putting the pieces together with corporate.

I can agree with you on all parts but the whole scandal of falsifying information to me AND TO CORPORATE is a big no no. I would not have flown 1500 miles to embark on a 1500 drive back home on the same day if I was told the truth about the truck but as we have learned, we were lied to. That may be the biggest issue at hand. Truth be told, I most likely would have bought the truck still even with the condition it was in if they had told me. I would have just had them fix the big issues before my arrival and made a deal on the price with the work included. That is how you conduct honest business.

You and me both my friend. I was dumfounded when I saw all of these issues. Tacoma number 8, yes, and what did stand out to me right away did not concern me because of my own diagnosis. I was wrong. It happens. I think we can all feel rested with our adverse opinions on the matter because of how aggressive Toyota Corporate is being about finding justice on my behalf. They advised me to seek legal counsel, that's how serious they have taken the matter.

In maine if you buy a vehicle from a used car dealer that put on a state inspection sticker they are legally required to have inspected the vehicle. (Brakes tires ect..)

I was trying to reply to a few folks but the messages have since gone away! Just so we all are on the same page, Toyota Corporate has totally supported me through out this whole mess. I am and will continue to be a die hard Toyota loyalist. It is indeed my 8th Tacoma and I will always love them. I have lost no faith in the brand and those who represent it. I just have a very sour taste for the dealerships that I haven't already instilled faith in. My local dealership is made up of some very good folks. I have always been overly pleased with them. Make no mistake, what justice I have received thus far is warranted and although I admit to my faults, that doesn't excuse the dishonest nature of those who made the sale. There is no need for anyone to try and tell me that I made a mistake, I am well aware of that. It was a gamble I have taken many times and it was bound to fail at some point and this is that point. I do appreciate the insight of all of those who expressed opinions of value. Whether your opinion came with criticism to me or not, those that were of true value were not overlooked. As for those who like to just run the mouth, you are now dismissed. Sincerely to most all of you, thank you for your insight, kind words, constructive criticisms, etc. I do genuinely appreciate it. It is what I was seeking.
